What would you do if you found money

After a discussion at a munch last night I have a question.
There was a story recently of a guy in Germany who bought some cabinets off ebay. When going through them he found a couple of envelopes stuffed with notes, €130K. He went straight to the police and they found the true owners and the guy got a finders fee. Supposedly under German law it's illegal to keep found money over €10, though some could claim how would the police know if he had just kept it.
Would you have kept it or handed it in? |

Going to be honest and say id keep it.
No one carrys that sort of cash if they are legit, you need proof in the uk where the cash came from and what its for if you have more than 1k iirc.
So yeh keep it

I would have thought that if he bought the cabinets he bought the money with them.
I was at an auction once where a woman bought a wardrobe, when she opened it it was full of vintage military dress uniforms worth far more than the value of the wardrobe. Apart from wondering why on earth nobody had thought to look inside it before selling it she'd bought and paid for it as seen and the uniforms belonged to her |

I cut open sofas before I get rid of them to check for money, keys, etc. If it was a wardrobe I'd definitely check before selling it. |

The rightful owner would be whoever bought it, but it would be the right thing to try to give it back. |

To be honest in the situation I’m in now I’d keep it. That sort of money would certainly help. I’m a long way from being really hard up but I do watch my money now.
I handed in a purse about 20 years ago, I saw a picture of a mum and child when I first opened it and decided not to look any further in case I’d be tempted. I was struggling then for money, but felt good that I’d done the right thing.
I prefer to give an honest answer than bullshit anyone. |

There are plenty of reasons why someone would have large sums of money outside banks.
But if it's inside something you buy are you then the owner?

It turned out the cabinet was sold by a son who knew nothing about the money after his 91 year old mother moved to a care home after her husband passed. |

I'd say it's up to the seller to check things are empty before selling. The last car I got had a couple of pounds in change on the floor under the seat, is it stealing because I kept no as it's upto them to check before sale |

I think it was house clearance.
I've bought second hand furniture before that has "contents". A sewing cabinet I bought had loads needlework things from the 50s and 60s in it in the original packaging. It was fascinating. |

Hand it in.
Years ago my brother and some friends (his) found some stolen goods, guitar in a case, a Chopper bike, some other things and in the guitar case there was £200 (this was in the 80s) everything got handed into the police. Investigations were made and everything except the guitar found their rightful owners. The guitar was handed back to us as the owner didn’t come forward, so we could keep it. One of the friends was learning to play guitar so he took it. The owner of the money, left £50 for each of them as a thank you for handing it in. |

Get it all changed into €10 notes, hide it in 1300 places, then "find" each not individually.
No, I'd not be able to keep it; I lose thing all the time and most of the time people find them and hand it in so if I expect others to be honest, I need to be honest myself. |

I wouldn’t hesitate in keeping it .I work for a charity and you wouldn’t believe all the amazing stuff we get in because when people clear out houses they can’t be bothered going through anything.
Their parents marriage certificates their ration books from the war it’s sad how you can just throw peoples stuff away like that and not keep anything.
The amount of money we’ve found stashed inside books is unbelievable it gets kept for so long then if it’s unclaimed goes to the charity . |
