...I'm leaving my cat in a cattery for 10 days next month. He's never been overnight anywhere.

Has anyone got any experiences of doing this? He's a fairly relaxed friendly cat so I'm sure he'll adjust fine. Just a bit worried he'll hate it

I've left mine at a cattery a few times - I did a lot of research into local catteries, recommendations from established breeders are a good sign. The one I use has cams in the cages so you can see and talk to them on Zoom. Never had a problem, the cats always seem to be happy and well cared for.

If your cat has a special blanket, make sure you send it with them - rub it over yourself first or sleep with it on the bed for a few nights before they go in - it helps to keep them comforted.

Ah yes, our cat goes into a cattery when we’re away for longer than a weekend (dad feeds him otherwise)

He’s totally unscathed and although I’m sure it’s not great for them, they’re warm & safe he makes up for it with mass genocide when he’s home again & a trail of trophies

Research the Cattery and look at reviews.if the reviews are all pretty much the same but good ones, then visit them. Ask if you can get some updates on cat settling in. They usually do this over WhatsApp

My Cattery are really good, they do supply the food but I prefer to take in what my cat is used too and they take her feeding schedule (meat x2 a day plus dry) also most of their reviews mentioned that owners cats didn’t want to leave….. I found this to be true too.

We've always left our cats in catteries. They've been fine except for one occasion when they just didn't like the owners for don't reason. They don't actually *like* it but I think it's preferable to them being left in an empty house

If your cats don’t like it find somewhere they do like. I had to do this once to leave my previous two cats at a cattery, they hated it. The owner said they never stopped meowing. I never used them again. Years later when my boy was 15 I was going south for a wedding. I was going to leave him at home with a cat sitter to come in and feed him but he was having episodes of not being well (he had CKD) so though it better he went into a cattery. New cattery run by vets who love cats. Different story, he loved it there and I couldn’t get him back in his carrier.

If you’re cats hate it listen to them

They don't hate it but they don't actively like it. They have free run of our house, garden and the surrounding area they're never going to enjoy being in a run at a cattery no matter how palatial or how much attention is lavished on them. I liken it to sending children to boarding school, their needs are met, their wings are clipped, they miss home but it's temporary and no harm is done

I have worked in several catteries and generally friendly cats settle in well within the first day or 2. My own cats have always been ok when I've boarded them.

Give them an item of your clothing to take in with them, that helps.

I get a mate to stop in the house feed the mog and have a free holiday by the sea - well that's how I sell it to him

We keep a blanket that we keep on the sofa with us for a couple of weeks before they go in. The cattery owners put that in their bed so they have the comfort of our smell.

I'm catsitting this weekend. Two mishievous sneaky tails A tin of mackerel and dreamies then they both fall asleep on me. Lucky them, no cattery they might be at.

I'm leaving him at a cattery that a friend has used for her cat, so it's been recommended to me.

The owner sends photos if you ask for them. Spends time with the cats, plays with them every day. Hopefully he won't be too bored.

He's got a blanket, I'll keep it on the sofa with me so it smells of me.

That's a really lovely idea to use zoom and talk to your cat.

I think I'll miss him more than he'll miss me

I feel a little better about leaving him now.

He really is a friendly cat. He's always trying to get attention and a fuss from my neighbours. Sneaks into my one neighbours house at any opportunity. Its the curiosity I think.
