As a responsible citizen I always make sure to warn oncoming drivers that there's a speed trap ahead.
The one thing that I'm not sure of is at what distance to stop doing this. Any thoughts? |

Depends on the amount of traffic coming through. I always assume others behind me are doing the same and if there's a decent flow of traffic it's not too long before I can stop. |

Just be careful you aren't seen as you can be prosecuted |

I don't doubt you, but that's a doddle to get out of -
"I was flashing at Mabel from down the road, always happy to see her".

Be careful because The Department of Transport says that flashing your headlights to warn
of a speed camera or a roadside police speed check is in breach of the highway code. Conviction
comes from a breach of section 89 of the Police Act 1996 which says it is an offence to "wilfully
obstruct a constable in the execution of his/her duty". |

"Fuck em. Don't speed, don't get caught.
If there's an incident or temp traffic lights or something, that's different."
100% this.
If someone is speeding then (a) they won’t listen and (b) they are dangerous and need to be taken out. |

Crazy world we live in! In the policeman's eyes he is stopping people speeding which he actually isn't, he's catching people speeding and yes there is a difference. By warning other drivers of the presence of a speed camera you are slowing the traffic down which is what the police claim they are doing but they aren't! If you are spotted warning other drivers you will get prosecuted- for slowing down the traffic !! Is it me?? |

Yeah it's weird you can get fined for telling people to slow down |

You shouldn't be flashing people because you know them either - might get away with middle of the road though |

No, you're getting fined for taking revenue away from the govt in the form of fines and increased tax in the cost of additional insurance etc.
Don't steal- the police and govt hate competition!! |

You are slowing them down for that small portion of road then they speed up again. If you don't know where a speed camera is going to be, you would think people wouldn't risk it |

Again why speed cameras are a joke! People jump on their brakes when they see one and speed up once they have gone past! Great idea near schools etc but pointless everywhere else |

If you have hit them.... then it's too late.
If everyone drove around at 30 like on Driving Miss Daisy then there would be no prob.
It's just another form of Poll Tax! Drive at 30 mph - Don't give 'em your money. It's taken 2/3 fines & course that cost £92 quid & 4 hrs of your time you will never get back. Was it useful - no! Have I learnt my lesson? YES! It's not worth it with the money squeeze we are all experiencing at the moment!!!! |

Speed safely monitoring is done in dangerous zones and even the police want to warn others of this danger. It's reasonable to alert others to potential danger, so I would think a couple of miles would give sufficient time for people to understand and make adjustments to their behaviour. |

I will always let others know of any speed traps if they appear to be going over the limit. As I would expect them to do the same for me. I’d do it for around a mile afterwards. Gives them
Plenty of time to find a steady speed (the limit) and if the car is noisy time for them to quieten down before getting to where the trap is. |

Good point. Mind if I use that in my defense?
It is clear to me though, that if the purpose of a speed trap was to slow down traffic then they wouldn't hide in bushes. It can only be seen as a means to generate revenue. |

My point exactly! Instead of putting out a speed camera van just simply put a police car there with its blue lights flashing! I guarantee 100% of vehicles will not be speeding ! |

It's as much about making money as slowing people down, if not more. |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
I have been caught speeding in the past. I went on the awareness course. It took at least 40 minutes longer than it should have due to all the people rationalising their behaviour with endless streams of "yes, but..." and "and another thing...".
A lot of the tired clichés above were trotted out.
If you feel so strongly that it's a revenue generator, drive slower. That'll hit "them" right where it hurts most... |

In almost 500,000 of driving on 4 continents I have been caught speeding twice.
On the other hand I have seen speed cameras hidden by road signs, behind trees, on dead straight dual carrigeways with no junctions and on motorway off ramps. Hidden or unnecessary they simply collect revenue. |
