Many would struggle a lot. The criticism of Excel is often that it isn't the right tool for the job its being used for.

But if the exact right tool costs a fortune and requires weeks of meetings with corporate IT departments to install, then using something that's a good enough tool is always going to be appealing.

It's a bit like a Swiss army knife. None of those tools would be your first choice, but if that's all that's in your pocket...
