In reporting that his concerns about pig heart transplants into humans have been found to have substance. A man in USA who had a heart transplant from a pig has died and 'porcine pathogens' are thought to be the cause. In layman's terms the experts believe that man died from a pig virus. What's going on guys?
This one is all over the news |

Without said pig heart the man would have died.
With it he lived longer.
Some more time or death. Is it a hard choice? |

That goes against everything that is known about pathogens. If it is a porcine bacteria or virus then it has jumped species which is possible but rare. Even the smallest life-forms evolve. Suspect that the journalists haven't understood all of the information and are still trying to get into writing drama for TV and film. |

The scientists are saying it and the reporters are reporting it.... |

He did die probably due to a pig cytomegalovirus infection. Pig cells are pretty similar to human cells and many viruses that will infect pigs will also infect humans. H1N1 swine flu is an example we should all remember.
If anyone wants to read an un-nuanced, scientifically accurate report, New Scientist is probably best. Stick the text below into a search engine:
Man who received pig heart transplant has died after pig virus found
Viral infection may explain why a pig's heart failed months after being transplanted in a ground-breaking surgery

"Dunno Tom, but my cousin is still okay 19 years after hers, so hopefully not too much to worry about"
They were not transplanting pig hearts 19 years ago. They have used pig valves very successfully for many years so this maybe what your cousin has but the person Tom is talking about was given a whole pig heart. |

That is exacy the report that Tom read and reported on. Some people treat Tom as a fool but if he had not left school at 14 he probably would have been a Professor in more than one area. |

"There is risk of infection with any transplant recieved be it from a pig or human.
"
This is not just any infection Frida. I can only spell this out in layman's terms for you.
This man is thought to have died from a pig borne infection. We call it a porcine infection. I have broken it down for you. Porcine is a term that Tom uses for pigs. This is in America so not happening in the UK just yet. |

We have to often take some calculated risks, when progressing with scientific research. The medics and the patient knew of the unproven transplantation and risks and the man had some extra life.
Would you extend your life, when close to death, albeit with risks? I would. |

Well Tom warned the medical world about this and they took no need. |
