If you had to buy a car, some kind of estate (kids and large dog), but it had to be petrol (short journeys mainly), and cheap on tax and fuel, with a budget of approx £15000, what would you get? |

I’ve got a Skoda now, which has a massive boot, but I was looking at some of the Kia’s too |

Oooh, look for a SEAT Alhambra. I am sure there’ll be plenty on that budget! I had mine for a few years until I upgraded to my Volvo XC90… it was a lovely, lovely car. Mine didn’t have slidey doors- the newer ones do. |

Combination of kids and a dog is a sure fire way of wrecking your car! With that combo I wouldn't spend £15k, probably more like £1.5k on a Volvo, VW Passat, Ford Mondeo etc...Keep the rest of the money for something you enjoy that won't get wrecked! |

I want something reliable for long journeys, and that I won’t end up having to fork out to fix down the line.
May as well keep mine in that case |

I am an Audi girl and cars a few years old come up at good prices. An A4, A6? Wouldn’t be too different from a Skoda I think!

Nothing wrong with any of the Kia or Hyundais.
Are you looking to change from Skoda? I quiet like the Octavia VRs Estates
The new Volvo V60 are nice, might just g3t yhe new shape at that budget. A bit boring though.
Toyota Corolla Estate are decent but a good bit smaller. And sssooooo boring.
Way more options with SUVs unfortunately, not nearly as many estates around. Plus a lot of estates will be diesel |

I’m going to be of no help here as I know nothing about cars all I’m going to offer as some advice is that figure out the space that you need and measure it physically when viewing. Do you know anyone that has a similar car to one that you want? |

Good to know
Have you considered leasing? I always lease my car, no worries about depreciation, always in warranty, no road tax etc.
I'm waiting on my new car to be delivered and it's one flat monthly for the lease, maintenance, tyres, road tax and insurance
Plus you get to keep your deposit money and use it to go on holidays or buy pick'n'mix or something |

Not estates but Citroen Berlingos and Renault Kangoos are very practical if boring cars. Pretty cheap to run too. Other wise I'd stick with Skoda or go Kia, both as good as other more expensive brands. |

Astra estates are always good, if you're not doing much motorway driving then the 1.0 is cheap to run.

Given the rising price of cars, even second hand cars are very expensive at the moment...I'd consider a VW polo...from experience they have proved v reliable and can transport kids and dogs. Admittedly, not sure how big your dog is though! ![](/icons/rainbow.png) |

I would personally get something cheap, if it goes wrong, bin it and start again. Soon everyone will have to go electric. German cars are great until they go wrong, Kia, Hyundai seem to be cheap and reliable, French cars and good in diesel format |

Personally I'd go for a Skoda octavia estate. I have the hatch version and the boot is huge. The hatch has 590 litres of boot space while the estate has 610. The jump in boot space size is only 20 litres but when you fols the seats down you get 1740 litres of space compared to around 1600 in the hatch. It's basically a rebadged VW, cheap to run with good gas mileage. |

I served my time at Peugeot, done my apprenticeship there before I moved to another industry, Peugeot has a tarnished name from years ago, their older stuff was pretty pants but they have really upped their game, their newer models are very good, they have some lovely looking cars, the 3008 GT and the 2008 GT line are awesome cars and very roomy |
