Question for my fellow metalheads
Jump to: Newest in thread
Simple question..
What group started you on your path down the way of the metal
For me when I was 16 a coworker handed me slipknot's self titled album.. I listened the that for weeks. And from there I started listening to heavier stuff and slipknot still makes me happy |

You know what? I can't remember a single specific band. I got really into Maiden, Metallica, SOAD etc when I was about 15 but there was a lot of different music that carried me along. Mr KC was/is heavily into HIM and stuff like that, he influenced me in that too. We have eclectic taste so not just metal we were/are listening to. |

At school in art class, one of the boys put on Appetite for destruction. 1988.
The whole class were hooked, good old swear words.
Metallica - Master of Puppets and Justice followed. |

Iron Maiden was my first, but all the stuff ah kid had on in his room got me into it. Pantera, Fear Factory, Type O (fave all time band) and other such 90's delights |

I'm not a full metalhead but there are quite a few bands I like. Motorhead probably started me off because I was a huge wrestling fan and Triple H had a number of theme songs performed by them |

As a wedding/pub DJ you start to expand past the cheese. Then I was introduced to the old Mission, Victoria st. Edinburgh.
Rock punk goth industrial indie and metal central - I Never left!! It was my weekend home for years..
Very punk driven to start with, bad religion, nofx, expanded to goth, big suzi fan, industrial and metal soon after... |

Black Sabbath
I was round a friend's house when I was about 8 and his elder brother had their first album on in his room. That 6th chord in the intro to the opening track, Black Sabbath, just blew me away. |

Slayer initially, then some Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Celtic Frost, Testament, Sabbat.
Then Dance Music happened and I left metal behind.
Then got in to Classical quite heavily.
Then veered in to industrial metal and experimental music.
Now I listen to almost everything.
However the most common thing I listen to is silence. I rarely play music these days. I find it too distracting.
I think the last time I played a CD at home was 9, perhaps 10 years ago ? Just not fussed anymore really. |

Iron Maiden around 11 - 12 probably because I loved the album covers and picture discs,
Got progressively heavier after that.
Still listen to Slayer, Slipknot, Korn, Machinehead, Trivium, Metallica, pantera, the list goes on
Got a guilty pleasure of The Pretty Reckless too.

Iron Maiden! My older brother was into them from when NOTB released in 82 and as an 8 year old I was just drawn to the imagery of Eddie. Bought POM on cassette with my pocket money the following year and the rest is history. My neither feel away from it after LAD so I inherited all of his singles and picture discs. Still my fave band of all time and any chance to see them live is grabbed with both hands! |

My dad liked rock, as in Stones, Animals, etc and my mates on the sane Street liked rock. Went to a youth club, god how old am I, and the DJ played all sorts of mixed.
That's where I first heard
AC/DC
Meatloaf
Judas Priest
Whitesnake (before the gloss sheen)
Pink Floyd
Rush
So with my pocket money, I bought rock singles and albums and was hooked. |

"Metallica... Hearing the guitar riff to One at the end of Top of the Pops, weirdly... Now, My favourite song of theirs on my favourite album of theirs "
AJFA is such an underappreciated album compared to Puppets. Yes there's the bass issue but what an album from start to finish. Still one of my faves of theirs and that tour was my very first gig so still holds special meaning for me. |

Age check!!! My mate gave me taped copies of Appetite For Destruction and Use Your Illusion 1&2. Quickly moved to Metallica, NIN, Pantera, Sepultura, RATM. Went through so many batteries in my Walkman because of those bands. |

According to my significantly older brother my favourite track when I was 3 years old was Iron Man by Sabbath and I'd make him play it over and over again until he was sick of it...

Worth listening to And Justice for Jason on YoutTube.
His bass track is much more prominent in the mix.
I get that the band were still reeling from Cliff Burton being killed but James and Lars hid some great bass playing by Jason. |

On a school holiday in south of France we found a bar that would serve us !
One of my mates put Ac/Dc on the jukebox ( his name was Angus ?) and we spent a few good d*unken afternoons in that place with the same music !!
Went back to listening to Ac/Dc when my friend now work colleague died aged 17 |

Being a teen during the nu metal era was kinda my soft intro to metal
I picked up an Ozzy ozzmosis album one day and that was my first real intro to actual metal |

Probably a housemate lending me the Metallica black album when I was at uni. He played guitar and played along. I remember him saying "you have no idea how hard that is!".
Never looked back and remember fondly when I listen now. |

Ditto Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance. I had a decent hi-fi setup and recorded the show to listen to going to work and back on Saturday. All the regulars but a mention for UFO, SPACE Metal & Strangers in The Night albums. |

For me (Raven_Wolf) it was when I was flicking though channels Kerrang and seeing the video for Metallica's One then I just fell down the rabbit hole of this crazy world. With my Partner (VelvetPanda) is was listening to her dad's LPs which range from Accept to Black Sabbath and everything in between. Last gig was Hammerfall and Helloween which was fun |

My old man was entertainments manager for a large local venue.
There were always records playing in the house. AC/DC were his faves. And Budgie, Cheap Trick and Deep Purple.
I've never known not loving this music. |

First metal music that I listened too was more than likely Metallica, I was only about 8/9. Within a year or two I got into the Swedish death metal scene, I'm talking like around 1991, bands like dismember, entombed etc. That then progressed into the second wave of black metal. Basically I love every sub genre of metal and have been a fan for 30+ years which I remember my mum used to say it's just a phase your going through lol x |

Born and raised on the likes of black sabbath, motorhead, thin lizzy. But I reckon it was always sabbath that really got me into it still a massive fan and so glad I got to see them play milton Keynes in 2001 with bill on drums, I dont think any gig will ever top that.
Mr Hayes. |

Funnily enough Sum 41 was the first band I truly got into and All Killer No Filler was the first album I purchased myself. From there it extended, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Slipknot before going deep into Finnish folk and black metal (it kind of took a spin whilst I still loved pop punk)

Nothing too obscure and has reigned in since my late teens. Bands like Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Bodom. I’d say I was always more into the folk metal with bands like Ensiferum and Korpiklaani though |

Weirdly it was AC/DC who got me into heavy rock back in the late 70s then Iron Maiden came along and I became a fan of lots of metal acts. I'm old now and have relaxed my tastes somewhat. |

Anaal nathrakh haven't listened to them for years. I got into black metal during the infamous church burning era bands like emperor, thorns, zyklon b, dissection, dark throne, all the classics lol, love all forms of extreme music of all genres though x |

i have liked metal but i was never really a 'metalhead' or anything really. in the 80's in south wales everything was completely dominated by rock music so it wasn't really surprising that i was playing in various rock bands, touring and supporting a number of bands.
the bands i admired were Budgie, Pink Fairies, Minute Men, MDC, DRI, Scream, VoiVod, Hellhammer amongst loads of others.
I have a huge softspot for Bad Brains on account of also being a huge reggae fan, so i loved what these guys did.
