The new Dr Who is Black and it's made my Sunday evening

Jump to: Newest in thread

Ncuti Gatwa from the TV show Sex Education has been named as the new Dr Who and honestly as a black man I couldn't be happier.

This is obviously a huge cultural shift in this country, (for the better) as I believe diversity propels the world together as one. Such an iconic role. Next up Rege Jean Page as James Bond

Fab family, what are your thoughts on this?

I think he's going to be great! I'm not a Dr Who fan, but he's brilliant in SE, and know he'll bring that same beautiful energy to being the Dr!

And, yes, it's beautiful to see more representation in iconic roles - one day, we can hope, it won't even be noticed...

I don’t watch Dr Who but Eric Effiong is a brilliant character. If Ncuti Gatwa can bring any of that energy to the role I might actually consider watching it.

It's going to get right up some people's noses. Part of why I want Idris to be Bond. He'd be fucking awesome in the role, but I'd also enjoy watching some quarters of the Internet become apoplectic with rage too.

Not a Dr Who fan, but think it’s fantastic that we’ve had a female Doctor and now a Black Doctor.

Not only will it bring a whole new wave of interest in the show, but give more media for black kids to look at and see themselves being represented…. And representation truly matters at formative ages.

see I love Idris elba, now he could take on the designation 007 but for me could not be James bond. Just because the character is written as a white male.

Jodie had the potential to be an amazing Dr but she was let down by woeful writing. That was a real shame. Dr Who really works best when there are long running story arcs - a new Dr needs to ensure that the writing is back to its best.

For me as a director who fan it doesn't matter if the the doctor is male, female, black, white, straight, non-straight.

Why because when I go to my doctor. I just want to be fixed. I don’t care who fixes me.

The actor is very good in Sex Ed, and I saw the interview with him and RTD. I can see the doctor being more flamboyant but I think also a bit dark as well

Now that Russell T Davies is back and a new doctor the show will be interesting.

I think Jodies doctor didn't take off epically her being the first femal doctor with poor scripts.

Hopefully having a doctor of colour and this being such a thing. It goes back to being a great show again.

I think he was great in Sex Education and is a great choice for Dr Who.

I also think Jodie W was a great choice as the first female Dr but was let down by dismal writing and too many Tardis companions.

I think the writing and production needs to get back to the sort of Sci fi we saw in the Tennant and Capaldi iterations, or Dr Who is going to fizzle out again like it did with Sylvester McCoy.

New Doctor, new inside Tardis, clothing of the Doctor. Looking forward to see how they change everything.

Now, can Auntie Beeb improve the scripts - cos I personally think the script writing has been a bit pants of late... I liked it when they had different writers.

Didn't know much about him as an actor but it seems he's got a BAFTA & experience in film & T.V. Can't wait to see what he brings....

I never understand the idea that an alien who changes their entire physical appearance and voice/accent can't also change their ethnicity or gender.

Dr who , it's an alien and it regenerates so it makes sense. I didn't make it past episode 1 of sex education, he was the gay character right? I'm excited that Russell t Davies is back and will look forward to this as the current dr who is absolutely shite.

But I'm not a fan of source material being changed to be honest, James bond isn't a person of colour in the book so I don't think they should be in the film.

I'd much rather Hollywood would come up with bad ass new characters instead of shoe horning black, Asian and other gender actors into roles so they can look diverse.

He appears in several episodes when David Tennant was the Doctor.

Idris is/was the natural successor to Craig's Bond. I'm not sure it's ever going to happen, though.

Honestly? Black, white or sky blue pink. If the person is good enough, then they’re the right person for the job. Whether be acting or otherwise.

So I’m pleased for him. Good luck to him.

As for Doctor Who it was coming for a while that the new Doctor would be a person of colour.

The James Bond role is still for the taking it would be nice to see a person of colour and female take the role and present it in an Atomic Blonde sort of way.

Dr Who (the tv series I was brought up with (original one) it started going downhill hill when Matt Smith took on the roll, it was still watchable but the stories were all over the place, since then it’s gone to the dogs. I quit watching when Jodie took it on, it not her fault by any means it’s the writers, plus The Doctor never had more than two side kicks at any one time but somehow Jodie needed 3 + 1 being a cop! It’s had its run, they need to stop this farce no matter what colour/race of the new dr. It needs put away now.

You're probably right, in the 70's our lives stopped on Saturdays when Dr Who came on (Patrick Troughton was my favourite). It was the only programme of it's type and took us to frightening worlds. I think it's lost it's way, there are alternatives for kids to watch with high production values which the Dr Who series has to compete with.

The beauty of a Dr who changes form is they change form. It's probably the least problematic casting in TV. How you see the Dr's character to some extent is subjective. Let's just see what the new guy has.

Agreed but Jodie Whittaker is a good actress and the first female doctor, but in my opinion she was let down by poor scripts.

Ncuti Gatwa is also a great actor, this is the first ever black doctor in such an iconic role so for alot of poc this is monumental, also Russell T Davies is back so it should hopefully have great scripts and get back to the proper sci fi

"Dr who , it's an alien and it regenerates so it makes sense.

There is a huge controversy around the upcoming LOTR series on Amazon for this reason. It is done so badly it is terrible.

"Ncuti Gatwa from the TV show Sex Education has been named as the new Dr Who and honestly as a black man I couldn't be happier.

This is obviously a huge cultural shift in this country, (for the better) as I believe diversity propels the world together as one. Such an iconic role. Next up Rege Jean Page as James Bond

Fab family, what are your thoughts on this?"

The Doctor is a Time Lord from Galifrey. I couldn't care less who plays the title role so long as they have some decent stories rather than trying to push "the message"

It looks to me like the show's runners are out of ideas and winding the franchise down again as they did in the late 80's when Sylvester McCoy was cast play The Doctor

I think it will be a brilliant day when we get a black prime minister in this country. I think though, that sadly the establishment are a long way from letting that happen!

Think it will be a do or die season, great choice of actor but let's hope they bring back good stories not making it moralistic history lessons like most of chibnals reign

Good luck to the new Dr.

But Why a black prime minister? As opposed to Asian? Or mixed? Or other?

I agree with anything that helps us all improve our lives and is independent of prejudices but very often we seem to overlook our largest racial minority in the discussion.

"Tom Baker was very good but that Garabaldi guy was useless...

Tom Baker was one of the great Drs though we basically got the eccentric Tom & I loved seeing him in the 60th anniversary programme as the museum curator. That was a great programme. "

----------

I really liked Capaldi's Doctor and he wasn't a million miles away from Tom Baker in his delivery at times. Plus every so often you would get a flash of Malcolm Tucker from the Thick of It and I just wished they allowed swearing on Doctor Who, so he could say fuckitybye to the Daleks.

I mean, any representation is important. And it’s progress. I think in the context of this thread, looking forward to a Black PM is normal?

I also don’t think Asian representation or issues are overlooked. Definitely not in anti racism resistance. And especially not in the context of decolonising education movements. Also, consider the way (through the use of terms like BAME) media has highlighted racial progress and based that on Asian representation in the cabinet for example.

I think resistance to racism has been different more recently but one important thing is that under the term ‘Black’ Black and South Asian communities have resisted racism faced together in this country.

Our experiences are different (hence why we no longer use Black as an umbrella term and why terms like BAME are unhelpful).

Not that this intentionally does it but I don’t think pitting minoritised groups against one another is necessarily helpful. Nobody is being left behind in this fight.

I would love the way they’d spin Priti Patel winning as a victory for feminism and anti racism too. I’d vomit uncontrollably that day

No. You can't mess with time, things have to happen for other things to happen...

Anyway, I think it's fantastic casting and I'm very much looking forward to the new season, new writers etc. The energy and humour that Gatwa will potentially bring to the show is an exciting prospect.
