Just don't know what to do to help a friend with Mental health problems

Hello fellow forumites, we have a friend who suffers badly with Mental health. She's had various mini breakdowns the last few weeks but last night she had a total meltdown. Without going into too much detail about her issues, we were just wondering if anyone knows who we can turn too for help. We rang 999 last night as she couldn't speak and was uncontrollably shaking, crying and shouting No No No. She's having Suicidal thoughts too. It was 7 hours till Amulance arrived. Thing is she needs her we can't give her. Who do we call, will they let us speak about her or is it Data protection. Sorry for the long winded post but any telephone numbers or pointers in the right direction would be most grateful. Cheers everyone.

Ali xx

I would call Local GP surgery. Local hospital. They should be able to give local help numbers for face to face help. Let them know about the suicidal thoughts. This should get help quicker.

Sending massive hugs to you Ali. Hope you are ok too. It must be very stressful. xxx

MIND, samaritans and local GP are the best riutes - GP will arranfe support +counselling and also help with any drink /drug dependencies

Its a really horrible situation - make sure you are also doing self care x

It is, we told all this too the Ambulance services last night including her Suicidal thoughts. I rang 999 at 7.59 pm and it was 3.09 am by the time it arrived, by that time she had took her evening medication and had calmed down a lot so they basically said they were happy with everything and left.

If she's at hospital now they should sort out a care package for her, either admission to a psychiatric unit, or discharge with CRHT (Crisis Resolution Home Teams)

She isn't, because she had called right down and they hadn't seen her at her worst, they were happy she was OK and they left. I have been up to see her this morning and she's a lot better. But she has flashbacks of her abuse and it all starts again. Just looking for where icon take it further but thanks so much x

Oh OK so she's not in hospital so won't get a referral to the crisis team.

You could try contacting them yourself.

The Mind website also have some helpful contacts.

Next Door

OP sorry to hear, how awful for your friend and you.

Short term, you and other being there to support her will help and so will a call to the samarthans( or similar).

Long term, she needs to ask for the help (gp should review meds, refer for counseling etc), try online/apps to help her through or if things get so bad she may get to a point where the help will just intervene. Which isn't nice for anyone.

I hope she reaches out soon.

Thanks everyone, I have rang 111 and they have given me a few numbers for various groups who can help and they are also going to follow up the 999 call and refer everything that has happened so far to her G.P on Monday. Ive brought my friend down to ours so she isn't alone over the weekend. Feel like I'm getting somewhere at last. Everyone who had been kind enough to comment and PM me I cant thank you enough xx

Doncaster & Bembridge

Just echoing what some others say, try your nearest branch of Mind, or if you have a local branch of Rethink (www.rethink.org). My OH has serious MH issues but mostly lives with them but daily fights against her demons. Hope your friend can learn to deal with her issues and learn to live with them. As my OH says, they'll never go away but hopes that one day she can come to terms with them and feel comfortable. There are times when she has either deep depressive moments or extreme anxiety and panic attacks. At those times there's nothing I can say or do to stop the pain except be there and understand. Although I sometimes get frustrated I can't stop her pain. She says that I can't make it better, but my reaction can sometimes make it worse.
