"Should they only be for the poor ?
Who else do you think they should be for?
Everyone is taking a hit.. they could be for everyone "
They are for people that literally cannot put food on the table for them and their kids.
People who actually can afford this then I don’t think they should need to.
Times are hard, but these banks only have limited resources as they heavily rely on donations.
I wouldn’t go because even though times are hard I can still afford to eat and I wouldn’t take a meal out of someone’s mouth to be fair. |

How do you prove who is genuinely poor though?
I must admit, the community centre around the corner from me offer "free food that the supermarkets are throwing away".
I'm not sure if that's the same thing but they don't advertise themselves as a food bank. |

I have volunteered at food banks. They all have slightly different criteria however almost all of them you need to have a referral.
It isn't necessarily about proving you are poor, It's all about need and most people would be quite surprised that lots of people attending food banks are people where at least one are person in the household is working.
In most cases its in an emergency situation or when something unexpected happens. |

The whole point of food banks are to help those in greatest need. If most of the country is in need, the solution is not to open them to all. The solution is to remove those from power that have no concept of what it is like to live in the real world. Those who show no compassion for those who cannot feed their children. And those who are using the class system to justify their actions on a daily basis.
And before anyone pipes up about the same whoever is in power crap. No it's not the case. Don't defend people who don't think twice about fucking you over on a daily basis. People need to wake up to what's going on around them, we are all people who deserve a good quality of living. Just because it's not affecting you yet, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. |

"Should they only be for the poor ?"
Depends how you define poor. A woman I know has a nice big house, 3 kids and 4WD and her husband just walked out leaving her with zero income. While waiting months for benefits she used the food bank much to a lot of people’s disgust.
They were designed to be for emergencies like that and not a permanent solution for low income subsidy, the government are responsible for that |

Course she could, or some clothes, jewellery or worked or begged ? most people have choices but in crisis and grief it’s hard to make choices and you need time to plan. And maybe not having a vehicle with 3 kids and not living near a school and needing to look for work wasn’t a good choice |

Exactly this... If you can't afford to eat but have full Sky access, a 50" plasma TV, Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime, 20 Fags a day, your fill of alcohol and a mobile phone contract of £50 per person per household then maybe you can afford to eat, but you choose luxury over necessity... |

Well when we hit lockdown two years ago, I couldn't afford food so I had no choice. I phoned my local food bank place and they were more than happy to give me food bags. They told me that they weren't just for the elderly, that they were for anyone who needed help. I'll be forever grateful to them x |

Nobody is forcing you to give food. If you choose to do so it doesn't you a right to decide who is "deserving" and who isn't.

I regularly donate because thank fully I'm in a position financially to be able to do so.
I give to food banks, I give money to the homeless and if I don't have money on me I'll ask the homeless guy outside asda if he wants me to buy him anything while I'm inside.
I wouldn't dream of judging someone who's in need and talking about their personal possessions as a gauge to whether they need help or not |

Sad to see that every time a thread like this comes up you get those pontificating about cheats and scroungers etc. I am not interested into the few that might fit that category. Only interested in those in need. I rather have compassion for my fellow human beings than be bitter about the few that might benefit undeservedly. After all you never know what might happen to any of us. Each to their own but I find the attitude of some people quite appaling |

"I don’t class a phone as a luxury Tom. "
Absolutely in fact broadband and mobile phone bills are now considered an essential bill. You would struggle to claim benefits without access to the Internet and almost impossible to apply for Jobs without it. |

"Sad to see that every time a thread like this comes up you get those pontificating about cheats and scroungers etc. I am not interested into the few that might fit that category. Only interested in those in need. I rather have compassion for my fellow human beings than be bitter about the few that might benefit undeservedly. After all you never know what might happen to any of us. Each to their own but I find the attitude of some people quite appaling "
Very sad but you can almost guarantee that these kind of people always come out of the wood work whenever the topic of poor people comes up |

" I never give a penny to so called charities ever..
"
Not sure that's something you should sound quite so proud about, Tom. I sincerely hope you never need help from a charity (though these pesky charities are also finding cures for cancer and the like, to all our benefit), but if everyone took the same attitude the world would be a much worse place. |

I give to food banks, I give money to the homeless and if I don't have money on me I'll ask the homeless guy outside asda if he wants me to buy him anything while I'm inside.
I wouldn't dream of judging someone who's in need and talking about their personal possessions as a gauge to whether they need help or not

I have noticed. Any minute now you will get someone to tell us that they had nothing grpwing up and look at them now and everyone should get up from their arse and do the same. If life was that simple for everyone. Most people try to do their best every day for their family and themselves. As I said, I am not interested if a few get benefits that may not deserve. That attitude deflects from supporting those that need all the support they can get. As I posted before these are the same people who have no sympathy for disabled people and the horrific, torturous hurdles they have to go through their claims but happy to focus on the few media stories about someone who walked down the street when they were not meant to be able to walk. I have no interest in even discussing anything with people with such indoctrinated minds so I am out. |

I used a "pantry" for the first time today.
Food donated from shops etc.
£4.50, you get 10 items, plus free fruit/veg/bread and personal care items.
Going to be a massive help over the next few months. |

food banks shouldnt be used by the poor/working class here.
Really it should be for those that cannot recieve benefit payments.
Which it was that way at one time.
The system is wrong when you need to goto a food bank.
However saying that if the area you live in is too expensive you either move to a cheaper area or suffer.
Really you cant complain as your prepared to except the highe living area or better known the posh areas.
Food banks is the start for the gov to refuse full payments except bill payments.
You will be expected to goto foodbanks instead for your food.
or better known as food vouchers.
Bill payments is elec, gas, water and not sure on tv license.
Expected bill expenses 30-40.00 and thats all you will get.
Dont forget this also includes your online by default aproach as well. |

I think that if someone feels the need to go to a foodbank then regardless of their outward appearance they should be treated with the same respect whether they turned up by foot or in a Rolls Royce
If they think they need it then they need it in

They are for people that literally cannot put food on the table for them and their kids.
People who actually can afford this then I don’t think they should need to.
Times are hard, but these banks only have limited resources as they heavily rely on donations.
I wouldn’t go because even though times are hard I can still afford to eat and I wouldn’t take a meal out of someone’s mouth to be fair."

Whats depressing is that on tv this woman said she is refusing to vote Labour because they will take foodbanks away.
No matter how much the interviewer tried to explain that under labour she wouldn't need food banks, she just didn't get it, and thought it meant she'd not have access to food.

What would they inspect anyway? Look in their fridge to see what's in there, or see if they have a television or jewellery they can flog for a bit of shopping? |

After the last GE, they interviewed people on the news and asked why the voted Tory.
"We wanted change" was the answer a few people gave.

That doesn't mean that they don't need a free meal just because they have access to a car. Could be a family who have experienced an unexpected expense or emergency or Somebody is picking it up on behalf of someone else. I guess it's easy to judge until we someone's story. |

Not all those dishing out food / toiletries supplies are official food banks that you need to be approved to collect your bag.
Just in our two sq miles, which is home to the glitzy ever rising tower blocks full of bankers & alike (a very small part of the borough) two three streets away are the true residents of the borough, not the daily visitors. To look after them, we currently have one ‘official’ food bank, 4 charities that give out hot meals every evening 7 days a week. As well as two organisations that take donations of anything & everything from restaurants, shops and residents to ensure no one is going hungry or have the basic toiletries needed.
The last two are there for anyone who needs it. Which could be a family or single person, all working, but nearing the end of the month and with rising bills, just not enough left to feed themselves.
It works and there is a good community spirit, if you have spare or something someone else can use you pass it on. The charities / organisations can only operate from all the donations that others give.
There are similar all through the borough.
After that ramble, NO food banks or what you think are food banks shouldn’t be limited. Circumstances sometimes dictate you may end up there yourself one day and if you can why wouldn’t you help others not so fortunate as yourself |

Well you pay your income tax and then you pay for your petrol with money you have already been taxed on and then you pay tolls and on and on it goes... Labour cannot allow food banks on their watch.. Question still stands how can you pay tax on donations when no money is being swapped ?
So if Starmer gets elected how is he proposing to feed all these people that currently use them? |

"Will Labour stop this food bank trade... They are likely to get in and it would probably be an embarrassment for them if food banks were running under their leadership.. would labour tax the food banks like they say they will tax the oil giants ?
How can you tax something that has already been paid for and then donated for others to use ?!?
Give your head a wobble
Well you pay your income tax and then you pay for your petrol with money you have already been taxed on and then you pay tolls and on and on it goes... Labour cannot allow food banks on their watch.. Either that or take a big slice of the pie if that makes sense.. Keith Starmer will get elected then soon ousted by the jack boots of the left ..
Tom is no typical thinker but he knows his onions
Question still stands how can you pay tax on donations when no money is being swapped ?
So if Starmer gets elected how is he proposing to feed all these people that currently use them? "
I wonder if you can do gift aid on food donations to foodbanks, I know you can on items you donate to charity shops but then I guess that's because the items get sold. |

Tom is an expert in many fields but tax evasion is not emongst them. He wonders if receiving this food is a 'benefit in kind' and should be declared. Perhaps they will take it off any benefits they receive.. |

Oh shush. Trying to get a rise by posting (very obviously) inflammatory nonsense is quite unnecessary. |
