The only person you can describe as being coloured without causing offence - David Dickinson off the TV. How the fuck has he ended up like that? And how does he maintain it? Quite unreal.

It’s odd how the labels change coloured, to black to person of colour. There’s also BAME, BME which originally was BAEM but In March, the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities recommended that the government stop using the term BAME.

Most of the black people I know , mostly Nigerians aren’t fussed, we even sometimes shock! call each other by the N word it’s seems some white people like to offended on their behalf though

Coloured was used by white people during segregation and hasn’t been widely used since the 70’s. Unless you’re over 60 and have lived in a cave your entire life you shouldn’t be using that at all. BAME is problematic because it’s just another way of putting everyone who isn’t white into another box.

Not too sure how a lighthearted post about a strange looking TV host morphed into this?

Anyway for what’s it’s worth ‘N’ it’s just a word. Only a problem if it’s used in an offensive way. What do you mean about the need to “educate yourself “? That one always puzzles me.

I think the vast majority would agree the word is abhorrent. What doesn’t help is rap artists and the like continually using the word in lyrics which some people then think legitimises it’s use.

Words have context. All words.

If x can use the word and it be ok and you can't, you don't know or have the context. Maybe safer not to use the word unless or until you do.

How is there a way to use the "n" word that isn't offensive - if you're white? I can't see how there's ever an excuse for that and when my son came up with the "black people use it" trope he got told exactly how it was racist for a white person to use it. How can adults not get it?

..................................

.....and yet you, a white male, appear to be embracing offence on their behalf!

For what it's worth I don't know any black people (a significant number make up my own family) who refer to each other by the N word, in fact hell would be raised if it ever did happen.

Why can't (some) white people just accept that the word is generally offensive, instead of constantly pushing back against the social norms of respectful behaviour? Why can't you refer to black people as just that 'black people', it's not rocket science.

Then we should educate them.

However, at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, we should probably not try to railroad subcultures.

If you encounter white children shouting profanity or racial abuse, by all means educate them.

Given your extensive experience of in-group acceptance of the N word among some cultural groups, you'll be aware that you're missing vital context and you should leave them to it. Those with the context will have the conversations.

My ancestors were overwhelmingly on the more powerful side so it's not a word I get to use.

My ancestors were overwhelmingly on the more powerful side so it's not a word I get to use.

(Although like you I'd say the word and apologise. I'd never ever say the n word. It's objectively worse)"

It felt quite uncomfortable to say the "w" word tbh. I don't imagine many British people know it. But for me it's so imbued with thinking of Greek and Italian people as second class citizens when I was growing up. And also calling Aboriginals a shortened version of the word. I still cringe.

"How is there a way to use the "n" word that isn't offensive - if you're white? I can't see how there's ever an excuse for that and when my son came up with the "black people use it" trope he got told exactly how it was racist for a white person to use it. How can adults not get it?

They choose not to.

If they don't look they won't see, and therefore it doesn't exist.

Nifty trick. On the intellectual level of "mummy disappears when she plays peekaboo"

"I think the vast majority would agree the word is abhorrent. What doesn’t help is rap artists and the like continually using the word in lyrics which some people then think legitimises it’s use.

Ah. The Black rappers using the word is the real problem.

No, but it doesn’t help. Or do you think it does??

I lived in London for 35 years and black kids use the term all the time amongst themselves.

Ah. I know where this is going. Nevermind .

Did you read the first line of what I said..??

Yep.

I just don’t want to get into a conversation about how this is something that Black kids and Black rappers are responsible for.

That’s how you interpreted it. All I said is it doesn’t help.

Impressionable people copy what they hear from ALL sources.

Then teach people in *your* orbit better. You do better.

I agree.

See first line of my post.

However some kids don’t get it and copy what they hear from whatever source. That’s what I was highlighting.

Those with the context will have the conversations."

Grandma spent a long time in South Africa. She even had a black person that lived in a little shed at the end of her garden that would do all her house work.

She has a whole bunch of nasty words I’ve never heard before for people that weren’t white. She’s a lot quieter now but when I was little she certainly wasn’t.

I had the mantra on repeat in my head "they knew better when they had the cognitive capacity". Because I had never ever heard them use a bigoted word before their cognitive decline was pretty significant.

What is the definition of a racist? Can only white people be racists? I remember meeting someone in China that said “I don’t like black people”. Does that make her a racist? Mind you, she also said she didn’t like Americans! "

All this does is undermine experiences of racism by suggesting that we should be grateful because the racism we experience ‘could be worse’.

Also being tolerated isn’t the win that you think it is.

Racism is illogical. As no two people are the same how can you dislike a race? It makes zero sense.

Yes it's perfection here.

"Racially motivated Hate Crimes are the highest reported type of Hate Crime in the UK. A total of 85,268 racially aggravated offences were recorded in 2020/2021 – up 12% on the 76,158 in 2019/2020. Ah. The Black rappers using the word is the real problem. "

Treating everyone as equal regardless of the colour of their skin, ethnic background or place of origin is just what we should all do and expect. Why would anyone think any different is beyond me despite racism often being described as a complex subject. It's sad that there is always so much going on that influences people's minds and feeds their prejudices. Just as in so many other things, there is right and wrong and there will never be anything right about racist behaviour or language. How could it be?

No brick wall, no deflection. I appreciate that as a white guy in a predominantly white society I’m not in the best position to comment on levels of offence from racist actions.

I suspect though that the overwhelming majority are more a case of cuntism (new word) than racism. Same applies to sexism & misogyny, ( a word I’d never heard until just a few years back) they are non discriminatory people that are rude / horrible to everyone.

Anyway- back to Dickinson. A villa in Spain or a sunbed?

Can I ask if people who have experienced racism, do you think it’s improving? Is it a problem for your children? We live in an area which is not particularly diverse and although I haven’t ever seen any examples of racism, I’m more than aware it exists.

My daughter (17) has a couple of close friends who are mixed race and they’ve openly discussed that it’s not been a problem for them so far. Let’s hope it continues that way for them, until they branch out into the big wide world perhaps

I’m lucky. Geordies are genuinely accepting people so I haven’t experienced much racism. Any I have experienced has been in anger or from someone who is very d*unk. I know others that have experienced it a lot more though.

I think it was getting better until people like Farage came about. Now I think it’s as bad as it has ever been in my adult life.

It's been a long time since I've lived in Australia but it's the same with "wog" (apologies) isn't it swing?

I think that word (and not as bad as n word but similar energy) has been a lot more reclaimed, but yes, I'd still never use it myself because of its (briefer, less bad, still bad) history.

My ancestors were overwhelmingly on the more powerful side so it's not a word I get to use.

(Although like you I'd say the word and apologise. I'd never ever say the n word. It's objectively worse)

It felt quite uncomfortable to say the "w" word tbh. I don't imagine many British people know it. But for me it's so imbued with thinking of Greek and Italian people as second class citizens when I was growing up. And also calling Aboriginals a shortened version of the word. I still cringe.

Absolutely. It's a little after my time, but no, just no.

Also that other word. Never ever."

We know the W word ok. Prevalent In several 60/70s sitcoms.

I would say n word is more reclaimed within black community. W word seems worse as only has negative connotations although it’s origIn is possibly more benign (gollywog)

You can’t hide from it forever. I never experienced racism really until I was like 11/12. Then it was the subtle things, the microaggressions, the being followed and stopped etc. some people never experience it. In the last 10 years alone I have experienced so much but I think learning more and studying more has made me hyper aware.

And in terms of my daughter (mixed race) she’s only small but there’s been comments made about her being lucky for not inheriting certain Black features and things like that. Do I think it’s getting better - it’s better than when my Nan and my mum were small. Not got better really during my lifetime though. In fact I sometimes feel like it’s getting worse in the last few years.

I don’t live in another country so why is that relevant? I have travelled to other countries and have never experienced any racism though.

My first real experience with racism was when I was around 13. I lost it and knocked his teeth out. I don’t think I’m a hard man or anything but that probably played a big part in me not experiencing much more. Others who don’t react probably get it worse.

I have heard bits of racism towards Eastern Europeans and I call that out as well. Other than when I went to Cardiff I haven’t actually met any Welsh people.

In the meantime, I’m still trying to educate my mum who will comment that a person is beautiful and ‘that lovely coffee colour’ as her way of being polite. "

Some people do find stuff like that offensive but that doesn’t bother me. I don’t mind a slip up if someone is genuinely trying not to offend. Nobody is perfect, we all mess up but as long as people are trying that’s all that should matter

"Can I ask if people who have experienced racism, do you think it’s improving?

Yes, that makes sense!! Same way as J has been called a big nosed wanker by d*unk troublemakers!! It’s the first thing they see that comes to mind if they’re throwing insults around!!

I have heard first hand terrible racism from welsh people towards English people.

You’re dead right! People are hateful - try living on the border, Welsh say English are worst for this & English say the opposite!

looollll you're clearly not understanding

There are higher rates of crime in black communities?

Are you sure?

Black people make up 3% of the UK population so not sure how you've come to the conclusion that they are commiting the most crime

And I'm not sure why you're so offended by my statement when it has 0 affect on you.

Protecting yourself from/ preventing yourself being victim of racism I think is actually a reasonable stance to take. Not the same as tarnishing all with the same brush. Just taking steps to protect yourself?

I love you guys!

I don’t wish to ever be referred to or judged by my race or my sex, but when people do or they tell me about my white male privilege or how I can’t possibly understand a “woman’s issue” (particularly when they wouldn’t dare tell that to a someone identifying as a woman) then they’re not necessarily being maliciously racist or sexist or any other ist or even intentionally offensive. They’re just expressing their feelings and opinions. I think it’s really important to judge people by their intentions rather than our own high, personal and sometimes false standards or the particular language we ourselves find acceptable.

Also just because some people are offended by a particular word, doesn’t mean it can’t be used. Use it at your peril though and be prepared to deal with (or blissfully ignore) the reaction it creates and the consequences.

Internet forums are without fail filled with bedroom brain boxes trying to educate their own view or own truth on people in preference to the collective reality we all share. Feels good I guess to try to make oneself look smarter than the others, whatever shade they are - it’s why people come here, right?

- insert comment from mod to tell me I’m wrong accompanied by censorship/ban -

Mad to see that a) we still don’t have a decent understanding of racism- specifically anti black racism. b) we seem to think that Black people protecting themselves from experiencing the violence of racism (because racism is violence) is racism in itself. - this is particularly funny because so many people on here say that politics has nothing to do with who someone would meet.

c) in the face of multiple Black people and mixed race people talking of their experience with racism in this thread, it still ended up with the undermining of our experiences and someone even confidently using the N word in the thread.

Great thread. Great great great thread. Love it here so much.
