As a fire marshall at my work ive found myself arguing with Health and bloody safety!!!!! They have canceled a name call/register when we do a fire drill. They say as long as ive cleared the workshop,toilets changing rooms and other area then should be fine. My argument is that this works in tests but if was a fire and lots of flammable stuff in my area it wouldnt work if i was blocked off from getting to an area to check nobody there. Are there any other companies doing this sort of thing? |

Yep. They scrapped it at ours.
It was something to do with there being to much reliance on a list. People can miss hearing their name being called, or may have popped out of the building without telling anyone, so then the building which is now even more engulfed in flames needs searching putting people at further risk.
Worse is if the Marshall calls a name and mishears an answer, they may leave someone in the building.
If the alarm is raised as soon as the fire is spotted, the building should be searched properly before it fills with smoke and it should ensure less mistakes are made.
Also, when people are gathered outside, if someone is missing, their colleagues would probably notice and mention it to a Marshall. |

If I was the one in the loo having not heard the fire alarm and my colleagues all thought somebody else had reported me missing or that I'd nipped down to fill my car up I'd want a register called even if it was just so the fire service could look for me after the event. Aren't there H and S rules that say even if someone is missing don't go back into the building inform the fire service? |

Wouldn't you prefer someone coming into the loos, finding you are in there and letting you know there was a fire, instead of leaving you?
In the case of you filling up your car, would you want the firebrigade risking their lives searching a burning building looking for you just because you missed a name call? |

I'm not in a position to change this register calling thing but if I was still working I'd rather a register was called than not. When I was working the fire marshall used to check the loo and call the register.
I most definitely would not want the fire service to look for me if I was down at the filling station, blissfully unaware |

I get a list isnt always correct but, ive no idea who is or isnt in work, we have alot of stuff that could explode and spread quickly, but im expected to search my area to make sure nobody is stuck or hurt. Happy to do but when on course was told not to be a hero, only fight the fire if its small. But if this is what fire brigade recommends then im with them as this is there area of expertise |
