if you want a brutally honest answer.... the answer is where are new york is slightly above sea level....so it will run off...but a ton of new orleans is below sea level... so if it floods... the water has nowhere to go and will just sit there....
so as city design goes... not the best....
but then it only takes one storm in a lifetime.... Katrina was NO's and hopefully Sandy is NYC's |

What a horrible thing to say, even if it was in jest!!
It was the east coast that was affected by sandy and not the west!
Plus all those people that have lost their homes and possibly loved ones due to sandy, an act of mother nature!!
What were they meant to do? Say sorry sandy but could you possibly go somewhere else??

"Well when LA, San Francisco gets hit by the big earthquake, the same can be said. It's due. Yet people still live in the area regardless. "
this is it.... they thought 89 was the big one... and they know there is one coming eventually....
I have a very personal example... the island where my mum came from montserrat... a volcano that had been dormant for the best part of 500 years came back to life and wiped out half the island.... and they are still struggling to recover.. |

Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
Many people live in potentially dangerous areas and have done for hundreds if not thousands of years. Expecting them to relocate, especially if they are poor, is unfeasible.
London could easily be flooded. Sydney was just the other year. |
