Right peeps,
My old dear Sat Nav finally packed up last night for good, it's an old one and has been playing up for a while..
I've got a budget of £140 for a new one that I want to purchase this week..
Any advice on ones to avoid or ones you give the thumbs up to.
Any advice warmly received and thank you in anticipation. |

I've got a TomTom which I used to use all the time until I bought a car with an inbuilt Sat Nav. The TomTom was great but it wasn't cheap to buy and updating the map to get new roads, etc... involved signing up for stuff I didn't want. In the end I gave up trying to keep it up to date.
However the other day I saw Garmin offer free updates for life. Now, I've not used their Sat Nav but I do own a Garmin GPS handheld device that the nipper and I use for Geocaching, and its very good.
If their Sat Navs are as good as the handheld ones then I'd recommend Garmin over the TomTom. |

When all the satellites fall out of the sky you'll be glad you invested in a map. |

Had a garmin sat nav for years and it always got me where i should be and not down tiddly little lanes, bit important when you have a large vehicle, but then the new ones on the market do seem to have got that problem sorted. Guess it because they are using better mapping software now |

When all the satellites fall out of the sky you'll be glad you invested in a map." I tend to find relying on laylines the better way to navigate when ashore. Don't suppose you live on on Little 1? |

Thank you to all have who contributed and given advice, it's sincerely appreciated...
I've got a lot of sound advice to go on now. I must admit I'm tempted with the devices/packages that come with free updates for the lifetime of the product.

We have had TomTom, Navman and Garmin.
The only one I would never buy again is Garmin.
The Navman broke when I dropped it but that was good a good sat nav.
Had to get rid of the TomTom as you couldn't put US maps on it in time for when I needed them.
The Garmin loves single lane dirt tracks over normal roads and everytime I use it to go on the motorway network it routes me up slip roads then back down again. And the traffic is rubbish compared to TomTom.
Complained about the slip road issue and was told to read the disclaimer in the manual and that they didn't guarantee it would get you where you were going

Plenty of good routefinders on there, either installed or downloadable...
"
Haven't got a smart phone and I have naff works phone so I'm loathed to go down a monthly contract option. |
