To be English is to not be able to settle on exactly what it means to be English from experience with past times of this being asked.

Some say drinking tea, some say tutting, some say drinking tea while tutting, etc.

Must have the ability to cause trouble at all major football tournaments. I'm Welsh, so that was just an observation I've picked up from the British media.

"To be born in England."

Not strictly true. Our daughter was born in Italy but considers herself to be English.

I was born in England but lived all over the world as a child and adult and quite often don't feel English or British.

Alexis was born in Yorkshire and will say she is Yorkshire first before saying she is English.

True. It was more a generalisation. I meant more raised in England and/or class yourself as English. I know many people born and raised here that don’t feel English and many who were born abroad and do. Either way it doesn’t really matter.

My dna tests show that I am entirely from what is now English territory, obviously I come from a long line of stay at homes. . I have no idea what it means. Physically I'm small and my original hair colour was dark are these English characteristics? How far back are we going because England as a nation has only existed since 927 prior to that it was a collection of kingdoms?

Living in Scotland now, as an English man, it means I am one of those lying, deceitful, duplicitous bastards from Westminister dedicated to keeping the Scots down, stealing their money and making them a target for Putins nuclear arsenal because of Faslane ---- According to the SNP.

Having said that the actual Scots are a truly lovely bunch of people.

As an individual those are my thoughts . I suppose all it means to me is that my ancestors met and reproduced within a very small area of the world. I must possess physical "English" characteristics and by dint of having lived in England for much of my life cultural characteristics too.

Interestingly I've just been talking to my brother who has lived in the far East for thirty years and is married to a woman from that area. He was saying his cultural references are about twenty five years out of date with regards to England and he watches TV to refresh them. God help him if he ever comes back
