Hope our American friends stay safe

It appears to be getting bigger. The full moon tide isn't going to help either. A bad hurricane season.

It's been classed as a super storm very rare! Feel for the people in Haiti, still trying to recover from the earthquake in 2010, 11 people have died in Haiti due to sandy!

Flooding or Hurricane, I know which one I'd rather be have.

Just hope the storm is considerate as it crosses.

the problem with a storm this big is that different parts of the country are preparing for different thing...

the problem with NYC and Conn is likely to be flooding due to storm surge....

for new jersey and Penn it is going to be wind damage

for maryland and delaware it is rain issues.....

yes and no... low lying bits of the city... so lower manhattan, lower brooklyn and coney island, jamaica bay queens and the rockaways...

but this thing is going to do damage from washington DC.. thru philadelphia and atlantic city, new york city and tri state, and up the coast to boston....

just been watching the news. Terrible for the families that have already lost people. I cross fingers for those that are about to be affected. They may lose their homes, but I hope they dont lose any more lives.

Great shame to see the Bounty tall ship replica has sank near the storm, two crew are missing, ship has been used in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

I have friends in Vermont who run a B&B business out there, who have been preparing for this for 3 days.

They were hit last year with another major hurricane and had a tree blown down onto part of their verandah and they lost power for 24 hours.

But the nearby town was flooded really badly as water surges came down from the mountains and engulfed the town.

The town has since built bigger flood defences in tha past 10 months and the hope is they'll hold (amazing, they can do so in 10 months whilst over here, the authorities can take years just to talk about doing so!).

My friends are in a rural location outside town; an hour ago, they said the advance wind speeds were quite frightening, but they have their own secure "panic room" set in the basement with food, water and other supplies on hand and they just have to ride out the storm!

Strangely, they said all the local wildlife has disappeared; animals sense impending doom and move to safety!

it is weird seeing the different stuff happening because of this...

the rain in massive rain in washington DC and Baltimore, the snow in west Virginia, the winds in penn and new jersey... the storm tides in NYC, Connecticut and Rhode Island....

the picture of the crane hanging off "157" as if it is going to fall off may be the iconic symbol...

looks as if the long island shore is taking a beating.... that doesn't bode well for NYC....

The city that never sleeps? ... it's closed.

It looks a bad'un that they're gonna get mullered with tonight. Perversely, I've always had a fascination with storms and would love to experience one first hand. Whenever it's thundering and lightening I'm always hanging out the window, or out in the garden, waiting for the next flash of light or clap of thinder. It mesmerises me.

Family and friends all battening their hatches the last I heard from them. They have had warnings to stay off the roads and not to go out to look at the storm. The emergency services will still have to go out.

I would complain that it has fucked up a little trip I was planning with a companion, but actually it is when you see the situations events like this force people to deal with, you realise how insignificant your misfortunes are.

We'd a group of American dlegates attending a conference, stating at my hotel, most of whom were from NYC, Boston and areas all around there.

Since they couldn't get internet or phone reception working on the USA side, they spent their time as a group watching the huge flat screen TV in our Lounge, watching all the news channels.

In one instance, one guy recognised s atreet in his area, being battered to hell by the elements; he was in tears!

One had to feel so sorry for all of them; all they wanted to do was to be home with their loved ones!

My heart goes out to them all, the forces of nature can be so devastating.

As it is I'm getting strong winds and rain battering my house, it's like spooky sound effects to go with the visual on tv.

do you know what part of the tri-state area they are in and I'll see what I can find out?

I am so glad I persuaded some of my folks to move out of the rockaways... it looks an absolute mess!! long island got it bad on both sides... the ratigan bay side and long island sound....

the amazing thing for me is that they are talking about having some sort of bus and long island rail road service running tomorrow where possible...

just the spirit of the people in the area..... they are a really tough bunch!!!

yeah... lower manhattan is an absolute mess... there is still no electricity south of 26th street.. if he is trying to get a flight out tell him to try newark (if he can get across the river) as opposed to JFK... the JFK area is a bit of a mess at the moment... but they are hoping to have it open on friday....

one of the more astonishing things is that they are still planning on running the NY marathon on sunday.....
