Happy Eater

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

In a time before the A1 became a much quicker but less interesting road after they took away all the roundabouts, the Happy Eater ruled supreme.

You could get everything there; breakfasts, fish and chips and they even gave you a little lolly if you were a good boy and had finished your meal.

Meals included the 'Happy Eater Fast Fry', 'Bangerbake' and fish and chips, while children's meals included 'Dog's Delight', 'Little Porkers' and 'Mr Happy's Ice Cream'.

It was the 80s. Buckaroo.

The rivalry with Little Chef was the Blur v Oasis of its generation. You had to pick a side - which one was yours?

I was always Team HE. Loved the little man with his mouth open pointing into it - a pose that's now frequently mimicked on page one of the hot photos.

Sadly they're all sex shops or Starbucks now.

Which was your favourite though? Was it my personal favourite at Markham Moor with the big swooping roof? The one at Selby Fork? The two that straddled the A14 at Newmarket? Or the one with the creepy tree on the A31 at Bere Regis?

Never heard of it.

Maybe because growing up we never had a car and when we did we only went local.

Have you ever been to Mauritius?

Oh I couldn’t possibly have eaten there, we always went to the Little Chef just south of Grantham. Eating at Happy Eater would have been a betrayal.

Sadly for HE fans, the Little Chef brand won the day after Forte bought them both.

Good old Happy Eaters. I do remember them, but we usually took our own food on journeys, so didn't stop at Happy Eaters or Little Chef.

Ah right. So they were similar. You did find them all on roundabouts

They were huge rivals though. I cannot stress how big it was. Tom would have been all over it.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe

I occasionally stopped at the one on the A17 at Holbeach when driving to college in Norfolk.

As a family we often travelled to Newcastle and Yorkshire when I was a kid as we had family up there.

But alas our family were picnic by the car types. Likely to spot us on a lay-by risking life and limb waiting for the camp kettle to get going as we sat about in deck chairs.

Never heard of Happy Eater. Remember Little Chef but never stopped off to eat in one. Seem to remember Granada service stations being a thing.

NARRATOR: Time would tell that the aspirations and dreams of 1980s America didn't not deliver on their promises.

Sadly, MRSJAE didn't get the memo and still rocks the big hair and shoulder pads

Did you know that the game Dizzy for the ZX Spectrum was initially created as vehicle for the Happy Eater man?

Well I'd have been a child at the time so now I think he's really strange.
