So a mate told me to google this...so I did..Why is a penis shaped like a mushroom...and this is why...
Which is a strange bit of design. But actually, there's an evolutionary reason for the shape. According to research from a team of scientists, led by one Professor Gordon Gallup (yes, really) the shape of the penis is there to allow it to scoop out other men's semen from a woman's vagina during sex...
Well all you fabber's did any one else know this? |

Yes I did know that. I read it a few years ago in a book called Sex at Dawn. It also explained that human mating is based on high sperm competition - meaning lots of males ejaculating into females and leaving the fighting to the swimmers. Whereas animals such as Gorillas etc have very low sperm competition and instead rely on physical strength / conflict between males for mating rights (and why a gorilla penis is smaller on average, has an actual bone in it to support the ‘boner’ and the intercourse lasting mere seconds).
It also explained other factors to support this from an evolutionary perspective, things such as female mating vocalisation (designed to attract and arouse other / more males during sex), and the fact that males with exhaust themselves and ejaculate and quickly become sated / sleepy / disinterested, whereas the female is only just getting warmed up and is ready to keep going, etc.
Sex at Dawn is a fascinating read and I would recommend it to anyone with any interest in human sexuality / evolutionary biology. |
