Obviously some really important news stuff over the past few years.
However it seems news outlets have become obsessed with BREAKING NEWS
Stories and running everything like it's the apocalypse.
This phenomenon seems to have started since 9/11
I can't really remember news being wall to wall before that with maybe the death of Princess Diana being the exception.
But these days it's like.
BREAKING NEWS!!
A celebrities dog has died.
It's beginning to trivialise actual really important content.
That's my opinion anyway dunno about you guys ?

"Ethel breaks silence on the situation!"
Click bait all the time.
Perhaps the intelligence of the masses has been reduced to needing everything in life to be like a soap opera.

I remember a few years back, one of the redtops banner headline "Posh Spice paid £1 million not to sing on the Spice Girls tour"
The real story, she'd never agreed to do the tour and the £1 million she earned was her share of the merchandising.
Talk about making a non story into front page news.
The way media twists actual events to create a "story" beggars belief sometimes.

I totally get where you're coming from. On social media I get quite a few 'breaking news' item with some very eye catching title, then when you read the full story it isn't even a worthy news story. I tend to scroll on past these days.

Local news is often worse than national, particularly online.
'Somerset Live' on social media contains at least 75% stories about every other county than Somerset.
I know pretty much fuck all happens round here apart from accidents on the M5, but fuck me.....I really don't need to hear about Shaz from Scunthorpe sueing Sainsbury's (other supermarkets are available) because little Chesney found a spider in his grapes, or how Doris & Boris are unhappy because some northern council has changed their bin collection day.

The whole concept of rolling news is a broken format. 24hour news should be 15mins / headlines on the hour. then 5mins weather and travel for lower by 40mins of a broad range of news from global & regional good news stories and happenings.
I can handle being depressed for 15mins an hour but it’ll need 40mins to pick me back up again.
Virgin radio’s policy is “just don’t have any bad news”
- Russel Howard’s “good news”
- Trevor mcDermot’s “and finally”
They are all telling the news cops something. The news corps aren’t listening.

I work in media relations and my job is so much easier nowadays. A news cycle used to be 24-48 hours long. Now if there’s a negative story that runs about my org, it’s yesterday’s chip paper in a matter of mere hours.
Just don’t get me started on my antipathy towards vox pops. No, Sandra from Teeside, I don’t give a shit what you think about the National Insurance hike as you’re on your way to Iceland |

Completely agree, the news channels are so desperate to get the “everyday view” from people that we’re often left with completely uninformed drivel from some random with a viewpoint…
Add this to the growing Disaster Porn type reporting where things have to be sensationalised and it’s no wonder that people give up on news altogether.
Unfortunately that’s when people start listening to social media for their information…. |
