Urban Seagulls bring Disease

Jump to: Newest in thread

Chelmsford

Reports that seagulls are becoming urban by nesting on buildings instead of cliffs and bringing a big threat of birdflu to humans because they have evolved to have no fear of humans and contact with them. On top of this councils are being prevented from culling the gulls. Experts say they could be as dangerous as bats in the sense that they may be the source of new strains of the disease. Should we be worried?

Delightful Bliss

No Tom. It's pigeons we should be observant about, especially with the potential cross over to back garden poultry.

Add the rats and there's a whole hodgepodge of disease to be had

Keep washing those hands

The last two years suggest humans spread more diseases.

Seagulls just steal ice cream, a bigger crime than you think!

So, so much.

A bat virus that existed for decades until humans got hold of it, and boom, all over the world.

Filthy creatures, these homo sapiens.

Haven't gulls always been urban residents?

They'll nest anywhere there's easy food and shelter

No. They are called seagulls for a reason. They used to live by the sea but increasingly spreading inland. One theory is overfishing. They used to follow trawlers and scavenge on the scraps. As the trawlers go further and further our the seagulls wings get tired. Also these big industrial trawlers waste very little. Where once a trawlerman would gut the fish then throw the waste overboard for the seagulls. This has changed. Little is wasted on these big ships. Not even the guts ..

You will find the seagulls were here before the houses were built. They are partial to a pied-a-terre near the local refuse sites though, possibly spreading back disease we have dumped?

Beginning to wonder if op is speciesist

Really no, they are not called "sea"gulls. People call them that colloquially. You mean Herring gulls.

Living on the coast a few of our buildings have them on them

The bird shit is toxic I think people would be shocked if they saw what they produce when there’s a few of them we’ve had to get specialists in to clean it

And it leaves damage behind

Also they are extremely viscous they nest on the roof of our building and attack you in car park whilst people think it’s funny they proper go for you and have drawn blood a few times

That's a good idea, but as long as they leave some alive to eat all the walnuts

Most cats seem to relish showing off their walnuts. And their walnuts would be all that was left if they went after the average herring gull. Evil buggers (Op™)
