I must admit to being a bit of a heathen where hymns are concerned.

I am pretty much fucked at weddings or funerals unless they have happened to choose 'Morning has broken'

Abide with me, that always chokes me a little.

Sang it at my Mums funeral and a year later at the Fa Cup Final.

Jerusalem for me , although I can't sing to it without getting a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. It was sung at the first funeral I went to my grandmothers.

Here ya go Jo

Time to get all cultural on ya !

This always sounds like it should be a hymn to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b-RehmqZUE

It's foreign (Portuguese) and I dunno why, but her voice sends me.

The translation is of the title is 'The Shepherd'

The translation of the words is :

Oh no one returns

To what one has left

No one leaves the great wheel

No one knows where they have been

Oh no one remembers

Not even what one has dreamt

And the small child sings

The shepherd's song

Out there burning still is

The vessel of fantasy

And my dream ends late

Leaving my soul as a watcher

Out there burning still is

The vessel of fantasy

And my song ends late

Awaking is what I do not want

Out there burning still is

The vessel of fantasy

And my dream ends late

Leaving my soul as a watcher

Out there burning still is

The vessel of fantasy

And my song ends late

Awaking is what I do not want

See, it even has 'hymn' like lyrics in there too !

"Abide with me, that always chokes me a little."

Hsve to agree fully with this choice. It gets to me each and every time I hear it and I blub like there's no tomorrow!

I once heard it sung at the annual convention of the Sweet Adelines, the female version of Barbershop Quartets. Six hundred ladies, all in perfect harmony, singing this wonderful tune at the close of their competition.

There wasn't a dry eye in the hotel convention centre; I'm getting goosebumps thinking about it right now!

I wanted morning has broken when we got married as we had a few children there and that's the one i used to love singing at school.

The vicar said no as it was only a funeral one

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

What are you choosing hymns for?

I love the dirgy ones. My favourite is a communion hymn - Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. It's the best bit of church (apart from Jevohah's - sorry, but I can't get on with your hymns).

Personally I think hymns at funerals are naff and pointless, unless the deceased was a regular church goer and was known for having favourite hymns they loved to sing. It is much more meaningful to have songs or music which meant something to the person, music which people can connect to the person and will bring out the memories of the good times in their life.
