Yes... But also no! We are complex creatures in that we are those things but we are also social creatures too. For the most part we require small knit groups that we care about and for. But survival requires us to be greedy and selfish within those groups - at times even at the expense of our groups. |

And that is a rational and well reasoned response! You do realise this is Fab forums right? |

"We aren’t innately those things in my opinion, we are made those things by society and our experiences in it. "
We actually are, self awareness is both a gift and a curse. Just look at chimpanzees, social creatures but most certainly can be selfish a greedy too. The difference, we are self aware of it.
Our own self awareness makes us like to think we are above it all, self righteous beings because we know better but really it's the brain not wanting us to truely admit that we are still animals and primal instincts, like its beneth us. If the world breaks down, people will revert to selfishness and greed for survival. |

"Human Nature" is a song performed by American singer Michael Jackson, and the fifth single from his sixth solo album, Thriller. The track was produced by Quincy Jones and performed by members of Toto with Michael Jackson providing vocals.
It was originally written by keyboardist Steve Porcaro, based on a conversation he had with his young daughter Heather after a boy pushed her at school, Porcaro said "he probably likes you and it's human nature". Porcaro, along with some of his bandmates from the band Toto, had been assisting with the production of Thriller, but he had not intended for "Human Nature" to be used by Jackson. However, Thriller producer Quincy Jones inadvertently heard a demo version of the track and thought it would be a great fit for the album. Jones then brought in songwriter John Bettis to rewrite the verses, whose lyrics are about a passerby in New York City.

Exactly this. Society is actually what tempers our more basic instincts, the idea of the noble savage has long been known to be incorrect. The worst violence always occurs where there is societal breakdown and anyone suggesting we're instinctively generous and socially minded needs to remember the great toilet roll crises of 2020
Also, brilliant earlier answer.

"Is essentially greedy and selfish.
Discuss"
Nope definitely not.
It's like saying some kids are just born bad , it's nonsense.
People are just born, what they become is influenced by their environment and the people and society around them.

Despite all the insightful philosophical comments, my answer is no. I am generally a realist, but I don't wish to believe that people are like this. It's not how I approach the world. |
