When you was a kid did you have to ask permission to leave the table

Yes, and it was the only way my parents could get us to eat Brussels Sprouts… we were desperate to leave the table on a Sunday lunchtime to watch Thunderbirds, and weren’t allowed to until the plate was clear |

"Seem to remember I did .
Yep.
Sit up. Don't slouch. Elbows off the table. Wait till everyone else has finished... Don't start till mum sat down... "
. . . and don't speak with your mouth full either. |

Christmas Day I still ask!!
It’s not as formal as please can I leave the table it more of a look at my mum and a “I’m getting another drink” comment I don’t move until she nods approvingly

I’m having a moment , please tell me I’m not only just realising how weird our family was.
We weren’t the only ones who said “can I get down now?” when asking permission were we? |

You're not weird. Our kids ask that now |

Yes, we had to ask to leave if we wanted to go before everyone else was finished. My dad wouldn’t let anyone start until we were all seated either, with the only excuse to that being large family gatherings where you’d be told “don’t wait”
I occasionally make my lad slow down/wait, rather than endure him bolting his food in order to get away. |

Now we're not perfect parents by any stretch of the imagination, but surely there are better ways to have 'family time' than to force kids to sit at the dinner table? In my opinion it's better to encourage them to stay with good conversation or by playing a game and when they have finished their plate, they know they can leave without having to specifically ask. Yes we did and if we were eating a chicken leg or something that was tricky to eat with a knife and fork, we had to ask if we could pick it up with our hands too. We were not encouraged to speak at the table either. Dad used to like to eat his meals in peace. |

No.
But I did have to sit straight. Not play with food. Speak when spoken to. No arms on the table. Use the correct cutlery.
At the end, I had to put the cutlery in the correct position to indicate I had finished and was free to leave when I wished. |
