Buy what you need not what you want
Meal plan and bulk cook ahead.
Walk if close to supermarkets if only getting small amount of shopping, instead of driving.
Same with work |

Be aware of the raw cost of the energy you’re using. If you have a gas hob, a gas kettle on there will cost less than an electric one to boil the same amount of water.
Same with your heating. No point saving gas at 9p/kWh and using electric at 28p/kWh instead.

Started walking 35 minutes to work instead of bus.

Make own lunch for work and stay out of canteen.
Could have decent health benefits too |

If you get your allotment you will have to get a shed, you would be amazed at what goes on in allotment sheds during the summer months. |

I've been using my laptop for day to day tech usage at last. It's cut my electic down by a huge amount. Before I was using the power hungry main rig every day. I took that for granted and did not pay much attention until now. |

There’s not much you can do if you’re all electric except keep a tight rein on what you use. Stuff like, if you want a mug of tea, you boil a mug full, not a kettle full.
What’s your heating and hot water setup? If you have an immersion heater, you can usually turn it down a bit. 55° is plenty hot enough. Some hot water tanks have two immersion elements, if you live alone then using just the upper one means you heat less water. Also, look at the timer settings; no point having the tank heat up hours before you want to use the water. Not unless you have cheaper overnight electric.
If you do have cheaper overnight (usually because you have storage heaters), then look at having a couple of sockets, or even another ring main installed so you can take advantage of it to run your washing machine etc overnight.
People should also be aware of unintended consequences of poor planning. A colleague stopped using their gas heating to “save money”, but the electric heaters they used in their two rooms instead cost more than the gas had been to heat the whole house.
Spot comfort heating with fan or convector heaters can be ruinously expensive. Another friend ran a wall mounted convector heater in his workshop, that cost more than the entire rest of his house put together.

Unfortunately it’s the cheaper brands in food, hospitality, fashion retail etc seeing the rises. Premium and high end brands are hardly affected as the margins are already high so can take additional costs.
The biggest savings for most on low incomes will come from reducing gas so practical things like insulation, draft excluders, sealing patio doors, DIY cavity wall with expanding foam , less use of washers and dryers , spending more time out walking and less time sat in a cold house , fewer take aways, alcohol and cigarettes and more home cooking from raw ingredients |

Do not seal cavity walls with expanding foam. Worst thing you could do and why so many properties now suffer with huge damp / mould issues. |

Buy bread and freeze it, only take out what you need - it defrosts quickly or toast it.
Boil your kettle ONCE make sure it’s full, then transfer into a flask. Should keep hot all day for coffee’s & tea’s
Don’t split colours of clothes for two washes, do them together and was on a lower temp, colours won’t run.
Use washing line outside when possible

Back to growing up. Lots of layers to keep warm home made knitted blankets to snuggle under when reading watching tv etc. When making tea or coffee, make a flask. Homemade soups stews and casseroles with lots of veg and cheaper cuts of meat. Use a slow cooker rather than oven. Grow veggies in back garden, if enough space keep chickens. Keep daylight hours if you can. Shower rather than bath. Turn down/off central heating. All things we did growing up cos we had no money. |

If I don’t batch cook, I make enough food for dinner, and lunch the following day.
I put a timer on for my shower.
Slow cooker use.
Airing the laundry instead of using dryers/radiators.
I’ve trimmed a few hours from my heating programs.
Walking to the supermarket not only saves me money on fuel, but also means I buy less. I can’t carry it. I don’t buy it. |

Probably 'tips' everyone already knows
Close the doors of each room. It retains the heat longer and uses less energy to keep it heated.
Turn the heating down or off in long term unused rooms and close the doors.

Great idea for a post, however saving the odd penny or pound is not the answer anymore.
The current rise seen across everything from taxes, energy and food cannot simply be avoided by money saving tips , where does it stop? Until we are all living in the dark around an open fire in a barrel?
As Martin Lewis has said, there are no tips, tricks or hacks this time around, it is far too expensive to live now. A sad truth for many that will be plunged in to poverty this year. |

Set the boiler so the water temperature is hot enough to touch that you don't burn yourself nor need to add cold water this saves both ways.water and electric if you have a water meter.you will only use the cold tape when you want not need. |

If you hardly watch TV, cancel your TV licence, get rid of any viewing box you have. You can still watch programs on OnDemand channels except Iplayer (BBC) YouTube, Netflix, and Disney+ ., if you haven’t watched a subscription for a while, get rid of it. You can always resubscribe later. Watch DVDs.
You cannot watch things like Amazon Prime/Now as these stream live, without a license
This is what I’ve done. I do pay for Spotify on Alexa, but this is less than the monthly DD for a TV License |
