I'm with octopus.

My bill is up 75% from 92 up to 167.

That increase alone is sustainable but take the increase in council tax, petrol, food and everything else it makes it a bit more of a squeeze.

I need to find a woman to snuggle up with... although some ladies aren't cheap to maintain either.

I read this the other day

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4N_feYV8xI

Energy firms are increasing customers’ direct debits by more than the 54 per cent cap imposed by Ofgem, according to ‘Money Saving Expert’ Martin Lewis.

There is no point having a price cap imposed by a regulator if the regulator won’t enforce it.

So, come on – check your direct debits and, if you’re being charged more than 54 per cent extra, contact Ofgem.

This but no need to contact Ofgem.

Look at your last full bill and it will give your estimated 12 month usage for gas and electric. Work out new cost based on that ÷ 12 and tell your supplier their figure is wrong.

I did and Shell Energy saw this coming (wow) and posted a ticket/request form on thie site so the correct reading would be logged today and held in a queue, so they can update at their leisure.

Failing that, just email your supplier with all of your readings and account details. This way you've put a time stamp on what those meters say today.

Make sure your new place gets natural sunlight, so you can come home from work and benefit from the afternoon glow. I don't have the benefit, due to upstairs' walkway and the buildings just opposite. Trees in the back don't help either.

You can actually do that? Tell your supplier what you're prepared to pay?

Problem with that is you’ll probably have a big bill at the end which you’ll then have to find. "

If the supplier had come up with a monthly figure which wasn't based on actual usage - why not challenge that?

Look at your last full bill and it will give your estimated 12 month usage for gas and electric. Work out new cost based on that ÷ 12 and tell your supplier their figure is wrong.

Mine did the same, £77 a month more than I needed to pay, were told swiftly where to go and what I would be paying based on my last 12 month average.

You can actually do that? Tell your supplier what you're prepared to pay? "

To a point, yep.

BG whacked mine up a couple of years ago, I was already a ridiculous amount in credit. Had a moan on the phone, they put it back to what it was and gave me back £300 of my credit.

A lot of it will just be automatic.

You can. I challenged mine. I could pay less but they said there’s a chance there will be money to pay at the end. Although since hearing on the news about the 54% thing I’ll be challenging it again as mine went up well over 100%

If what they are asking is higher than your estimated usage over the last 12 months yes.

They wanted £300 from me, based on my last 12 months it works out at £223 a month, I'm not giving them £900+ a year more than what I'm using.

No, as it was based off my usage for the previous 12 months. You can find this on any bill, multiply the new price cap kWh rate by the amount used for both gas and electricity. Add standing charges.

Add it all together +5% VAT and you have your annual bill, divide by 12 for monthly payments.

Most suppliers are asking way over what you will actually use on the new price.

Fixed until the summer here. By then at least it will be warm enough to cut back considerably. And the way I see it, by then hopefully either a) the Russians will be begging us to take their cheap gas, or b) civil unrest will have resulted in energy providers incinerating members of the cabinet to keep the lights on.

In a strange way we're lucky. We had issues giving our meter readings for a long time so ended up owing them about £400 by the time it was sorted. We've just finished paying that back. As our bills were higher due to that anyway, ours is only going up £20 so doesn't feel as painful.

We don't pay by direct debit. We give meter readings and only pay for what we actually use. Don't see why they should take a high direct debit and out account sit in credit with them.

This is with the new cap. The cap is dictated by wholesale gas prices which have sky rocketed in the last year.

Gas and electric are different rates. Your bill will be split so they can charge accordingly.

We're not tied into a fixed deal, we're on the standard "green" energy so there's no "early exit". So, no exit fees.

the privatisation of the UK’s energy system that began in the late 1980s and early 1990s has given rise to a highly concentrated market dominated by the ‘Big Six’ energy companies: British Gas (Centrica), EDF Energy UK, E.ON UK, npower, Scottish Power, and SSE.

Common Wealth’s analysis shows that the Big Six have paid out almost £23 billion in dividends the last ten years, nearly six times their tax bill for the period. These findings illustrate how the privatisation of utilities has redistributed income—previously destined for the public purse—to shareholders. Some of the major shareholders reaping these dividends are foreign governments, while others are asset management firms and investment banks that principally service rich households.

High prices are here to stay, what’s going on in Russia is only the tip of the iceberg with the increase in global cost. Demand is high, coal power plants are shutting down worldwide, we don’t have the facility to produce green energy on the scale expected, gas is used to produce electricity so the price will never drop to a level we have seen in the past. The whole electricity market is going through a reform and has been for some time which is also driving power costs up.
