What did your parents do to save money
Jump to: Newest in thread
My mum cooked everything from scratch and we never had things like shop bought cake. Fizzy drinks and crisps were for birthdays and Christmas only. I don't think it was a case of saving money though, more a case of not having it to spend on those things |

Employed their kids as child labour.
Grew our own fruit and veg, kept chickens, shot game.
Log fires, big pots of stew and home baking.
Nagged us to death for leaving lights on, or doors open.
Stayed with relatives, rather than hotels when we went on holiday.
My brothers got hand me downs from friends/family. I was the only girl, so I got the family allowance.
My dad did jobs in exchange for goods/services. I remember a guy redecorating our lounge once, for my dad fixing his car!

The post above reminded me my dad kept rabbits and chickens for the table and grew fruit and vegetables. My parents lived through WW2 they were used to rationing and make do and mend. We were well fed and nourished but I still prefer the convenience of today |

Bought enough cigarettes for themselves then gave us hand me downs from our cousins. While we were on 2 pairs trousers a week mum was on 60 a day. We went on one not visiting family holiday during my entire childhood and that was in a borrowed tent. It rained constantly. Best days of my life. |

Grew vegetables
Cooked from scratch, and used ingredients to death where possible
Bought second hand
Hand me downs
Local holidays
Used everything they could to death (although I think the 1960s board game is still functional)
Didn't smoke or drink

I don't think it was saving money, just a totally different mindset.
Had less clothes, mended clothes when needed.
We grew our own food, as much as humanly possible.
Had several thick wool blankets on our bed. Did not have central heating upstairs.
Did not waste food ever.
Treats were exactly that treats not a daily thing.
Holidays were being sent to my grandparents for the week. Was blinking awesome, got to put sugar on our cereal |
