Straw Cats
Both versions are worth watching, although my personal preference is the Sam Peckinpah version, set in Cornwall in 1971, with Susa George, Dustin Hoffman and the recently deceased Del Henney, who is killed using a mantrap.
A young Jim Norton, who was Bishop Brennan in Father Ted, also stars as one of the thugs who is beaten to death with a poker.
The 2011 version set in one of the southern states of the US does not have that element of menace from the 'Sam' version. |

The cat that got away.
This 1958 film stars a very young Hardy Kruger who recently passed away.
He played Franz Von Werra, the only Luftwaffe pilot to escape from GB during the second world war.
The interrogation centre, Trent Park was the actual RAF location at Cockfoster used to gather Intel from prisoners. It was packed full of sophisticated listening devices that were state of the art.
The psychological methods as portrayed onscreen were those used on POWs.
Colin Gordon. and Michael Goodliffe are the two RAF interrogators of Kruger, who was actually in the Hitler Youth movement during the Nazi era.
Some great scenes set in Cumbria, where the prison camp still exists as a listed building. |

The Cat
Denri Machin is a real card, a term no longer used to describe a shrewd entrepreneur who knows how to exploit opportunities that he creates.
Stars Alec Guinness and an exceptionally young Petula Clarke.
Glynis Johns is a dancing instructor, who is a gold digger and uses Denri, the Card, until he tires of her exploitative methods.
This film is being shown today, Sunday on TPTV. |

The day of the cat 1973
This is, by a long chalk, the better of the two versions. Fred Zinneman's direction, with multiple clocks visible is a masterpiece of research, timing, planning, espionage and negotiation.
Some of the methods for identity disguise are still used to the present time.

Catness
The recent TV replication of Harrison Ford's sojourn with the Amish, 37 years after the original film was released in 1985, is an indication of people's dissatisfaction with their modern lives, and a latent desire to move to a less complex, more wholesome and potentially more satisfying life.
Amish life is not for everyone, but I have long envied their cooperation, sense of belonging and satisfaction with life.
However, I do not believe in a supervening deity! |
