Salem's Lot

I finally watched the 1980s version of Salem's Lot after knowing about it for years. I really enjoyed it - I love the way they went with a Nosferatu style vampire and it's really well made and directed. But I've never read the book - has anyone seen and read it and can say how they compare?

My colleague read it. But only as he first read the sequel! I think he enjoyed it but he always had his nose in a horror book.
