Been on the app for over a year learning Dutch. I thought I'd not be a thick brit, and would learn some of the language for a visit I have planned.
Actually, the Dutch language is pretty hard, with all the double negatives. Has anyone else used the app and thought 'why am I doing this', even though it consumes 30 minutes of your day, and wished you'd just learned to order a beer

"I like Duolingo and managed to get by in Portuguese and Spanish but using it. It suits me
I just didn't want to be ignorant and at say a few words "
Same for me. It's very handy if you want to be able to use the basics. The staff in hotels always appreciate a greeting and a how are you in their native language and it's good to be able to say please and thank you in shops and bars. |

Same here. Not planning on going to a debate or anything, just the basics will do. I'm with you, I think the locals appreciate it, even if you balls some if it up |

I've got relatives who live in a pretty remote part of Spain. Obviously they're fluent but the locals always giggle at me good naturedly and my attempts to talk to them |

"Nederlands is helamaal niet moeilijk
Only word I don't know there is 'helamaal'. That hasn't come up yet "
Helamaal has about 10 different meanings, in the sentence I used it means completely or definitely. |

I've found that with many Dutch words, especially with 'de' and 'het' and how they're used in different meanings. Thanks for that word |

"I tried to learn Greek but gave it up after two weeks. Greeks hard!"
I don't think we're good at languages in the UK, as we're use to other people knowing English. I went to Hong Kong, and the fluency was perfect x |

"I tried to learn Greek but gave it up after two weeks. Greeks hard!"
Once you get it, it’s actually a really logical language and not too hard at all
Once you understand the cases and the grammar rules - you’ve got it |

"Mr KC has been learning Dutch on Duolingo since lockdown 1
How's he found it? The double negatives are bewildering x"
He's been getting on okay, I think. I can speak and read Dutch a bit. Helps if you've learned German before, which we both have. |
