The healthier the egg the lighter in colour the yolk. 
If the yolk is yellow chances aren’t the layer was free range (proper free range)
If the yolk is orange or dark orange chances are the layer is a battery hen living in squalid conditions
Anything in between could be a younger bird to what they call “barn free range” which is more than likely the same as a battery hen just squashed into a barn setting with 1000s of other birds.
BTW I’m not trying to educate or make you change your shopping habits. The riddle was something that my dad used to ask us and we got it wrong every time  |
