Six months ago, my brother did the same as you. I thought he was mad!
In his particular line of work, he is now turning work away and earning himself a fortune with the work he is contracted for.
So, it can be done.
Good Luck! |

" Think I may have made a mistake!
Finical situation isn't good.
In what way?"
My monthly outgoings will be around £1,400. So I need to be earning more than that a month and given the current climate people don't seem to be able to earn that anymore. |

it all depends how you get paid, if its by the day, you need to work out how many days you have to work to breakeven, if its by the hour work loads of hours, just dont take time out to go dogging in the van, if you dont work you dont eat |

You get paid per mile. But rates are very low. Some firms offering just 58p a mile! I'd put the hours in bug still don't know if that would pay enough?!
My boss has given me until Friday to make my decesion! |

That doesn't seem too bad to me, avg cost pence per mile for a van is around 25p, to net 1400 per month over say 20 days you will need to do around 215 miles a day which is reasonable depending on whether its local work or a bit further out.
if you work more days then you're in the profit simples |

I'm sure I read on the forums about someone who works for a courier franchise and they were not happy with the amount of work versus the money they earned. Sorry can't remember the name of the company at the moment.
But the gist of it was, there wasn't enough money in the courier business any more. |

just a thought ... if ur managing to live fairly well off ur current wage why not take ur bosses kind offer to retract ur resignation and go back to ur regular job .. but sign up for some of these courier firms and maybe work some weekends or evenings as a sampler to get the chance to see how the companies work.. how much work they are likely to pass u and maybe chat to some of the other drivers to get a feel for how it may work out going self employed before jumping in at the deep end ! .. wish u all the best ! |

I am not really managing with my current wage. Costs me £200 a month in fuel just driving to work.
Its a nice idea to keep my current job and do weekend work but I'd still have to lease a van, which would cost the same and it would be parked up most of the week...
Thinking cap on |

My ex did this as a subcontractor, for a well known firm (he had worked for them for years before hand)
It is hard work and you do have to fore go your holidays to start with, but he is still doing it, nearly over 10 years later and is doing ok just remember if you are self employed you are able to claim things back such as fuel(vat if registered), uniform, van depreciation and if you are savvy, you can buy a new van, on loan and your first large instalment, can be a vat only invoice which can allow you to claim it back in the first few months, making things a bit easier, so it can be done! But yes you do have to put the work in as well! |

I've been a courier both on a motorcycle and in a van. Broadband killed the same day bike business and the next day parcel business, while the number of parcels is growing, is suffering from really aggressive rate cutting. There are too many people that think while the wheels are turning they are earning money. Too often you end up working to just keep the vehicle on the road. |

My business partner & I started up a Pluming & Heating business 5 months ago.
Work was pretty thin on the ground for the first couple of months and we had to grit our teeth & bear it. Just invested another £500 today for a lockable roof rack for the Transit & a roof ladder. Money well spent in my opinion as we have just secured 2 more jobs on the strength of that
Speculate to accumulate |
