How far are we from WW3?
Jump to: Newest in thread
All these sanctions having zero effect on this war for Putin.
Poland getting more involved due to borders and the huge increase of people crossing over.
Huge increases in the price of oil and food etc
Saudi refusing to bring the price of oil down as requested by America.

Close. The US is losing its lead and Russia and friends knows this.
Also could be considered a war over fossil fuels. Maybe after we’ve cleared the rubble a world council will rule no more gas or oil. Renewable only. |

It’s happening either Cold War 2 or WW3 is playing out now - we are starving them of money and hacking the shit out of Russia as they are to us - next he will cut the gas supply one way or another this is already playing out. |

We won't go to war unless he attacks us
There is no appetite for it
However, if we keep poking, we may get bit
I think if we send the Polish planes in, that'd be enough... |

It's a test. Putin is seeing how far he can push the West. He likely gambled that Covid had weakened our resolve, but looks like he miscalculated. Anyway as Munich, The Edge of War reminds us, you cannot afford to appease dictators. |

Russia has been buzzing our airspace more frequently for a while, their submarines have been more aggressive plus staging fancy assassinations. Russia is ready and wants a confrontation.
They’ll take Moldova, the Baltic states and try to get favourable governments across the east.
They’ll grow in strength in Africa and the Middle East.
It’s the biggest nation on the earth right at the heart of the Eurasian land mass.
I’m not into scare mongering but a war has been brewing for years unfortunately. |

Russia will not back down whilst Putin is in charge it's not in their nature.
If he's taken out it will be seen as an attack on mother Russia and he will become a martyr.
This is going to go on for a really long time I fear.
He's holding all the card's and he knows it.
Or only hope is China distances themselves from Russia but if he's backed into a corner it could be worse.
The USA might sit back and let Europe fight it out if there is no direct threat to them but can't see that happening.
Sadly as someone had already pointed out the Ukrainian might be a sacrificial lamb to the slaughter for the greater good of the world.
But will it end there??
I fear WW3 had begun already it's a matter of time to see how it escalates.
But what the fuck do I know I'm just a carpenter and only know from various news channels, radio and TV broadcast.
An uneducated guess at best. |

Putin has totally misjudged the strategic context of what he has done. Not only that, Russia have got it so wrong on the Operational and Tactical level too.
Russia CANNOT take and hold Ukraine. He cannot even take half of Ukraine, let alone hold it. He will be ousted from within in time. |

With his loyal mates who are losing money everyday and looks likely they struggle to get the power they once had ?
The only way they can come out of this with anything is to stop putin from pushing the nuclear button!!
Pull out the troops and help with their own money to rebuild the country?
Think it needs NATO to push a little bit harder for the guys near putin to put and end to his rule ! |

They have to take Ukraine first and the Baltic States are members of NATO so that a whole different prospect. |

The thing that troubles me is all the calls for NATO to intervene.
NATO don’t seem too interested in the Saudi’s bombing Yemen with training and weapons purchased from NATO.
This is not a NATO matter, in fact it’s the growth and threat from NATO that has got Putin so twitchy.
Fortunately the leaders realise that NATO kinetic effect against Russian forces will result in total war and are doing all they can to stay out of a fight that will be disastrous to all.
Ultimately NATO could as things stand defeat Russia, let’s face it, everyday this conflict in the Ukraine goes on, Russian forces are diminished and spread thinner.
I can’t understand why the United Nations are so docile in this situation. |

The UN is pretty toothless. The General Assembly can't pass binding resolutions and Russia has a veto on any security council resolutions. |

No…NATO won’t get involved unless a member state is attacked. If there is any whiff of nuclear button pushing (that isn’t just posturing) either a military coup will happen or someone within his inner circle or from within will put one in behind his ear. Nuclear war is a lose/lose and no one will want to see them and their families vaporised by a madman because he has no other way out…no matter how loyal they are.
This may rumble on but unless a NATO country is attacked it will become geurilla warfare on the streets of Ukraine and as previously said there is no way Russia can hold it. |

Nuclear threat aside if NATO got involved with a true show of force (if indeed it ever came to that) then this thing would be over within a week.
However the nuclear posturing is the issue. NATO won’t get involved anyway |

"so what about cars etc... can hardly get rid of all the proper cars
No use with no fuel. Strong incentive to go electric.
The govt are planning to tax the hell out of ICE (proper) cars anyway. " I'm a petrol head. I shall be keeping my car till there is no other option. Currently on the hunt for a v6 version of my car |

I totally get it, but the way things are going it’s likely to become prohibitively and expensive to run. " I'll sell my soul.. it will be okay. It can't run on e10 anyways. |

Anyway to answer the OP... I think this is the closest we have been to another world war for along time but.. I do not think Russia wants that anymore than we do.
Putin- I think he will be removed from power |

Russia is now sanctioning grain etc in retaliation to those the West have implemented. To say the West's sanctions aren't or haven't worked isn't true OP.
It's led to near 300 major companies to exit or suspend operations in Russia by choice - remember all that is sanctioned is Russian freight, oil, gas and Russian finance.
Once the public see places of employment closing, places of convenience or goods ceasing on such a massive scale, not only the economy will be hit but people will start to question why, as companies will state why they are existing. Putin needs a consistent message, which prison sentences etc wont help.
USA/Europe are pretty together on this - Putin is the aggressor, not until he exists should he be trusted in the remotest.

A nuclear, solar, wind, hydro, tidal and hydrothermal powered Middle Ages? So not that different to now but with fewer emissions? |

Just what diabolical political slips justify bombing an independent country? |
