Well Russia has laid claim to the lands for centuries. Plus it doesn’t want more NATO allies next door. Plus Putin wants to flex his muscle against a perceived weaker and more divided west. Could get a lot worse yet I think.. |

I think this is the start
But glad to see that Ukraine is holding it's head high and acting with dignity and humanity through asking Mothers of the Russian soldiers they have captured to collect their sons. And also told them to come collect their dead.
It's just good to know that there is good in the World

Laying claims to a land and doing something about it against the will of 43 million people are two different things.
The irony is that Putins actions have united the west, bolstered the power of NATO and seen more countries on Russia borders thinking about joining Nato |

It’s got nothing to do with being picky. The use of the emoji that you chose completely changes the tone of your comment.
It left me wondering what it was you were expressing.
As far as being techno savy it’s simply selecting from a line, nothing techno about it.

They see it as a recent breakaway republic. If NATO don’t act with force it will lose face. Plus I don’t see a United front except among the British public. Putin has admirers both left and right across the world. |

Oh, come on! I'll bet you consider that Computers, IT etc are all EASY.
To many people of different age groups, it's frightening to work out what to do.
I was assessed a few years ago when unemployed, by a Computer training expert assigned by my Job Centre that with PC skills, I inwardly "panic" at anything requiring completion.
I was put on a PC For Beginners course, for 5 days each week for 3 weeks. By the end of Wk 2, I was still struggling to get through Day 2 of Week 1's training.
So to respond the way you have, shows that for some people, doing the technical stuff ISN'T EASY AT ALL. |

This isn't in abbreviations, this is quite clearly a I think we all know what that means.
I think it was completely right for people to point out the smiley face as it totally Confused what was being said and I don't think people should be called out because nobody was rude about it. |

The fact that the Ukrainians are taking the time and effort to say fetch your sons, is the most humane form of humility and this needs to get back to Putin.
Live soldiers can return and tell their families their side of the story. Incinerated, by the side of the road. Like Putin wants, is the ultimate in NDAs
Ukraine, NATO and the rest of the world is not at war with Russia, just the despot.
Putin needs putting out, preferably by his own people, that way seems the Russians have had their say.

I was just going to say that but the problem is many Russians are so indoctrinated they won't believe it anyway.
I saw an interview with a young woman who lived in Ukraine and whose mother is Russian and lives in Russia. She was telling her mum about what was happening in her city Kyiv and even sent her live video of the shelling and she still didn't believe it. |

Yes, the undoctrination (new word alert) will take ages to reverse. But those children who are in Russian jails right now, will have long memories and no longer willing to worship Vlad the bad.
Some of those children have fathers, uncles, brothers and cousins, who will be really pissed off to learn about children in cells.
The threat is going to be from his own people, seeing how he has no sense of danger...will this become his downfall? |

The problem is that Putin wants to limit news output to Kremlin controlled Russian TV & Radio stations.
Over the weekend, he closed off BBC News channels, Facebook and Twitter. But one network that's getting the real news out, especially to younger more influential generations and which his technical people cannot close is TIKTOK. |

Unfortunately ticktock has pulled out but the biggest reason is because of Russia's new law to imprison people who are spreading fake news so ticktock has said it has become a security risk. The BBC have launched a get around for people in Russia to be able to access its services. |

Sad that the UK didn't remain in the EU, to consolidate action and help to sustain peace. We've been far too slow to act against Russians of interest, it's embarrassing.
Things have to get worse, until Putin is curtailed in his ambitions. It's tragic. |

Thanks for the update on TIKTOK. I did hear that an anti Russian news channel is still operating, but they're located in neighbouring Latvia, where Putin can't touch them. |

TikTok is closing itself down so it doesn't fall foul of Putin's new "fake news" laws. Apparently direct messaging within TikTok will remain but posting new videos and live streams will be blocked in Russia. |

. This war should help us to truly learn the effective power of indoctrination.
Sadly, even if the majority of Russian citizens did see the light, they would have very limited abilities to get rid of Putin.
I think it will have to take highly powerful insiders to want to take power from him. He's likely so paranoid that he'll have built in protective control measures, to aim to prevent this, as much as possible. |

I don't think people were harping on about it I think it was completely appropriate for people to point out but it seemed misplaced and then people will called knobheads. People have tried to put the thread back to the OP, it is the OP that is pulling it off track. |

I get that I just don't understand the relevance to the post.
Possibly because of being pulled up about the smiley face, and people harping on about it.
I don't think people were harping on about it I think it was completely appropriate for people to point out but it seemed misplaced and then people will called knobheads. People have tried to put the thread back to the OP, it is the OP that is pulling it off track. " maybe another pissed guy on a Sunday . "The fact that the Ukrainians are taking the time and effort to say fetch your sons, is the most humane form of humility and this needs to get back to Putin.
Thanks for the update on TIKTOK. I did hear that an anti Russian news channel is still operating, but they're located in neighbouring Latvia, where Putin can't touch them."

If you've been drinking and not sure what your saying it's probably best to put your phone down. This is a really serious subject that has a lot of people really upset and worried so it's Probably best to revisit the subject on A-day when you are not pissed. |

So to respond the way you have, shows that for some people, doing the technical stuff ISN'T EASY AT ALL.I remember when my son was getting annoyed at me when trying to teach me computer skills, I replied 'don't forget, I taught you how to use a spoon. "
Is that a Windows or Linux spoon? |

"Well Russia has laid claim to the lands for centuries. Plus it doesn’t want more NATO allies next door. Plus Putin wants to flex his muscle against a perceived weaker and more divided west. Could get a lot worse yet I think..
Laying claims to a land and doing something about it against the will of 43 million people are two different things.
The irony is that Putins actions have united the west, bolstered the power of NATO and seen more countries on Russia borders thinking about joining Nato
They see it as a recent breakaway republic. If NATO don’t act with force it will lose face. Plus I don’t see a United front except among the British public. Putin has admirers both left and right across the world."
NATO is a non aggressive defence pact which means it an only act if a member of NATO is attacked. Ukraine is not a member of NATO therefore it cannot get involved. The west has already pushed the legal limits of what it can do in respect of the war itself by providing arms and now planes to the Ukrainians.
I do wonder if Putin is trying to provoke a response by promising a ceasefire and then immediately breaking it |

I was just listening to a news report that was actually suggesting that the order for a ceasefire had gone through from the Kremlin but the troops on the ground did not obey it but obviously we have no way of knowing what's true and what isn't. |

It’s got nothing to do with being picky. The use of the emoji that you chose completely changes the tone of your comment.

As far as being techno savy it’s simply selecting from a line, nothing techno about it.
I feel for the op,we're not all clued up about the various symbols etc, I remember when lol meant 'lots of love ',..try putting that at the end of a bereavement card..sorry for your loss lol,.totally different meaning now...any one with half a brain will know and understand what the op is trying to convey, so let him. Don't be a knobhead, and ridicule him for his lack of understanding of today's meanings.
Try not being such a knobhead yourself "
Yeah you're definitely not the one coming out of these exchanges looking good. Imagine derailing a very empathetic and humane forum post about a huge human tragedy over a choice of emoji that was *clearly* an error, what is your problem lol? |

Again it depends what source of news your watching.. if it's media on bbc itv sky it's all owned by the people who control what news is shown and how it's presented.. there hasn't been massacres going on.. it's actually a massive fail so far by Putin.. Ukraine are holding the lines.. the attacks have been on key buildings and a lot of Russian soldiers have been captured and taken hostage.. it's not the same as America when they fully slaughter countries like Syria and Libya for no reason other than oil and banking |

"Sad that the UK didn't remain in the EU, to consolidate action and help to sustain peace. We've been far too slow to act against Russians of interest, it's embarrassing.
Things have to get worse, until Putin is curtailed in his ambitions. It's tragic. "
I'm sorry but you are wrong on this, not just slightly but significantly.
In terms of sanctions, troops provided to give training and equipment provided the UK is head and shoulders ahead of every other nation or collection of nations.
The anti tank RPG's you are seeing the Ukrainian forces carrying the big hexagon shaped tubes are UK forces NLAW anti tank weapon's.
The UK has done everything it possibly can and we should be proud of it, whilst not a competition at all but seeing as you mentioned the EU collective they are not even close to the provisions that the UK has made. |

The EU has nothing to do with defence. It was on the table but when we left they were still arguing over it as per normal. Russia's actions might mean they get it sorted quicker than normal for the EU.
I think the UK response has been pretty good with Sanctions and the like. Do feel we need to improve with regards to refugees. As for actions against Oligarchs there seems to be some legal loopholes that Parliament needs to close quickly.

It doesn't suit the Conservatives to have Russian money out of the UK. Eg Rees-Mogg has interests in Yandex (Russian tech co) but weirdly it's not facing sanctions... |

What was / is peculiar is this didn't happen overnight... It was in the press for months and you'd like to hope therefore on the intelligence desks of all of those global policing bodies... The UN, NATO, the EU, the US and yes the UK too. Even after turning a blind eye to invading the Crimea peninsular. My history isn't strong but I'm not sure appeasement has ever been successful with Russia or any aggressor. I'm far from convinced economic sanctions, even if they are properly introduced and in a timely fashion will scratch the surface. They will just pivot east to China who will take all the gas and oil they can get.

Sanctions can and have worked in the past and definitely played a par in South Africa However they take years to have any real impact. The fact that individual companies en masse are pulling out of Russia will probably end up playing a vital role though. |

How do you know that? I very much doubt Putin is a FabSwinger.

Orthodox Christianity would not look favourably upon someone being a member of somewhere like Fab, I'm sure. In any case, there's more chance of finding men on Mars than finding the President of Russia on here, I think.

For Putin it’s turned out a massive miscalculation. Instead of an easy victory he’s got
1. Russian economy destroyed. Russian bonds are junk rated. Rouble is about 80 to the $.
2. United NATO which will now expand with new members and increase defence spending.
3. Shown NATO that the huge conventional forces of Russia are actually quite poor and would not survive contact with professional NATO forces. Hence the nuclear threats.
4. Ultimately left the West with no option but to dismantle the Russian state. Threatening nuclear war every time his demands aren’t met? Too dangerous. |
