Afternoon!
Getting my first tattoo on Monday,
What’s the crack with running or cycling onthe days after?
And anything I need to do to protect it?
It’s going on the inside of my bicep.
Thanks |

Oops yeah to protect it... my tattoo guy uses a clear dressing material that stays on for a few days. That protects it till healing starts to kick in. They will advise on moisturising it. |

Apparently sweat messes with the ink. I got one on my thigh that put me out of action for nearly 2 weeks. Surprisingly the 2 weeks off running freshened me up and didn't really make me lose any fitness so no dramas |

Cheers for the feedback everyone.
Def have something to eat before hand in case blood sugars drop.
And use the time off just to chill and enjoy the rest. |

I’ve been tattooed whilst hungover with no food, my longest sitting was 7 hours, just depends really how you react.
I find it quite therapeutic.
As for after care they’ll tell you (or should, unless your tattooist is wank).
I’ve been back in pretty hardcore environments as soon as 3 days after having a tattoo and it hasn’t bothered me or affected my tattoos.
Just decent aftercare, leave the second skin cover they put on (or keep it wrapped in cling film for the first 48 hours for the moisture and to prevent ink getting on every fucking thing you own).
Then just good tattoo aftercare cream.
And don’t pick it. |

"Cheers for that, not the first to say it that’s why I’m now getting a bit anxious
Got some emla cream and it’s only a fine line 6” tat"
I've never used numbing cream as I'm weird and like the pain a bit but apparently it's good. I might try it when I get a sensitive area done though |

Everyone has different opinions but here's my tip. Clean it regularly with fragrance free baby lotion for the first few days, apply bepanthen ointment and cover it with cling film. It'll help with healing and stop the ink running onto your clothes and bed sheets. Wear and old t-shirt to bed in case the cling film comes away too |

Obviously follow the professional care guidance from your tattooist.
Then see how you feel regarding running and cycling. Given the position I would put clingfilm over it for first couple of days if you are exercising as your clothing may rub against it. Give it a good clean after exercise and continue your normal aftercare.
I have run the following day after being inked on my foot and ankle. So it can be done, just be careful and look after it.

They changed the formula for bepanthen so it's not generally recommended for tattoos anymore.
Just be sensible with it op. Clean regularly with warm water and unscented soap. For the first few days you'll want a barrier cream on go prevent things getting in to the wound. Don't use moisturizer until it's scabbed over as that may push ink out.
Anything overly strenuous that gets the blood pumping may also affect the ink in the skin.
Any tattoo artist I've been to has not encouraged covering with cling film longer than a few hours....something to do with plasma collecting under it, I dunno.
I'm so ready for a new one! |

Cycling should be fine if you keep your hands on the handle bar. Running might rub and get painful or even infected.
I work a physical job with lots of movement and I went straight to work after getting my arm tattooed and it healed fine. |

Excessive sweating for the ink has settled can cause some of it to sweat out so I would wait until the coloured 'goo' has come away
Ibuprofen for swelling
And be prepared for the pain after.
That's always the worse part of me, getting tattooed isn't so bad but I'm always in pain for about a week(depending on the size of the tatoo) after while the skin tries to recover |

Tattooists actually tell you not to use bepanthen any more, apparently it doesn't help healing as much as it used to |

You'll be reyt; but then tats aren't too painful, but that's me. I did feel the needle on my sternum and having my chest over my heart tattooed was a bit weird but not painful.
I suppose anywhere there's skin on bone without too much flesh it could be sore.
I find it all very therapeutic, but then I fall asleep in the dentist chair and also fell asleep when I was getting a camera down my throat, gastroscopy....

Take food and drink with you, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours afterwards, your tattooist will give you aftercare instructions. Tattoos are addictive good luck |
