I've shut off most of my flat, turned the heating off, wash everything on cold and eco, wash the bed sheets less often, and only cook (batch cook only) with the slow cooker and microwave. I'm never going to complain about my hot flushes again because they mean that I don't need to put the heating on. My kids always did call me 'the radiator'

" There is already a price cap in place, that limits what energy suppliers can charge customers. They are all selling energy at a loss because of it - that's why so many of them have gone out of business in the last few months | |||

"What's batch cooking?" I always cook enough for 2-3 days , chilli,,curry etc and a huge pan of rice or pasta. It rarely makes it to fridge or the freezer as there’s always people here eating so just stays on the cooker , but when I do get the place to myself I freeze portions. It’s so cheap , I spend around £100 - £150 a month of food for 2-4 people. I’ve noticed oils and fruit rising in price but the amount of disposable income spent on food is so small that inflation isn’t really felt | |||

Last year was a harsh winter combined with more people at home during the day. That meant more usage. That meant prices went up As more was used last winter there is less reserves so prices have gone up. The UK no longer has masses of gas storage facilities, we can't buy cheap and sell at a later date. | |||

I have more than enough disposable income but am very careful, can live comfortable on around 10% of my income but this week have cancelled PT sessions at £140 a month and massively reducing things like Uber, eating out and buying clothes. " Yes in part. People who need less and give more are generally much happier and successful. I’ve always encouraged my kids to live on around 70-80% max , save for emergencies, enjoy the things that are free and give a good chunk of income away | |||

People have just got used to throw away rather than repair, replace what's in perfect condition. I'm not saying that it's the reason for high energy bills but it must add with transportation costs of goods and so on. Obviously if you can buy something newer that's more energy efficient and can save you money then go for it." Make do and mend as they say. It really is negligible. If you have a smart meter you can check it for yourself. But every penny doesn't count"The whole "turn it off" thing is made to seem much bigger than it is. Yes, something on standby uses power, it would be idiotic to assume otherwise. It would also be idiotic to think that turning it off uses more power in standby than when it's in active mode. In what universe does that even make sense except maybe for a very few small number of niche items, and even then questionable. Will turning off instead of standby save you money? Yes it would, you very likely won't notice how much overall though. You would also save more money by not using it at all or not using the device in active mode ever but keeping it in standby. That would be very noticeable. Standby vs off you will be saving in the areas of 60p per device (different for every device, some more some less) by switching off a year. So ~60p x number of devices. | |||

I try to drive more economically, and a quieter times in the day to encounter less congestion. I batch cook using slow cookers. And heat with microwave. Rarely cook on a gas hob now. Heating has been replaced with clothing layers. Shower temp’ turned right down. Total savings may not amount to much, but it might mean we all get to eat instead of me having to skip eating so I can ensure the women of my house do. " Yes and no depending on what you are cooking. Example I could put a joint in a slow cooker for 6/8!hours and I’d save a lot more energy than putting it in my fan oven for 4 hours. Apparently an average slow cooker uses 135-160w, where as a standard oven is 2500w. So simply put, apparently ‘ You'd need to use your 160W slow cooker for around 15 hours and 42 minutes to match just one hour with your electric oven’ Even an air fryer oven that I have may use the same energy as an oven but, I don’t need to warm it up, it’s smaller than an oven, it cooks food quicker, so saving energy costs that way. I tend to steam / cook veg in a microwave as again quicker and more cost effective than on the hob. | |||

Bathe with your partner or have an alarm set to say 5 mins for shower's. Change lightbulbs to low energy efficient one's. We have two spare quilts that we keep behind the sofa and wrap up in when watching the tellybox. I'm never going to complain about my hot flushes again because they mean that I don't need to put the heating on. My kids always did call me 'the radiator'

1 rad off out of 10 is 10% less. It won't be as simple as that, rad size and efficiency and temp will all play a part but it's a good enough ball park."That is what I'm thinking, it isn't as simple as turning off 1 radiator out of 10 and saving 10% on energy bills. As you said, radiator efficiency, size etc will all play a part. If you open a door to a room that isn't being heated, how does that impact the heat of the house and how long the boiler needs to stay on. I think the idea of turning a thing off like a radiator is automatically going to save you x, may not really be the case all the time. | |||

That’s why they normally saying 5-10 mins pre heating Air fryers are 1/10 the size. So it’s much less preheating Even though an oven and a good air fryer will run around 2-3kW - the air fryer is more efficient | |||

" Apart from Sky on a basic package neither do I, but I suspect many people consider these essential & they will have crept up by stealth. Dumping all or just one is a saving that can be put towards other bills. As a single dad looking after 2 kids 75% of the time I have to be very keen on keeping my bills low & trimmed outgoings heavily after my divorce to keep my house & drag the bank balance up. It's now worrying after 3 years how long my efforts will last before the savings I made are back up to previous levels cos of that bastard Putin. | |||

I bought a place that has this plus a wood burning aga that also does the central heating and hot water. Obviously it came with the cottage so I don’t know the purchase and installation costs, but £80 worth of wood and £50 of coal will see me through the winter. Get used to getting up to add wood to the fire all evening though, you use up your own energy doing that | |||

For many savings have been depleted during two years of covid. It's not an option for me, I don't have the space to store the wood. | |||
