Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel, who starred in the 1974 erotic French film Emmanuelle, has died aged 60.
"She died during the night during her sleep," her agent, Marieke Verharen, told the AFP news agency.
The actress, who had cancer, was admitted to hospital in July after suffering a stroke.
Emmanuelle, which told the story of a sexually promiscuous housewife, spawned numerous sequels and played in a cinema on the Champs-Elysees for 11 years.
Released in 1974, the soft-focus French film was one of the first erotic movies to be shown in mainstream cinemas.
Kristel herself attributed its success to the changing censorship laws of the era.
Emanuelle was the first "adult" film that I ever watched. At the tender age of 13 and a bit, somehow or other the cinema ticket seller accepted that I was 18 and in I went to watch this film and to watch Sylvia Kristel. And what had spurred me to go and watch this film, easy, the local Vicar was so hacked off at the council for allowing the film to be shown, that he had a sit in protest at the Church, giving the film huge publicity, meaning this was something I HAD to see.
I've always had fond memories of Sylvia Kristel and Emmanuelle ever since and didn't even know she was ill. Sad to hear the news today, RIP to her and best wishes to her family |

At her 'peak' Sylvia Kristel had the most pert pair of funbags I've ever seen. Such a young age to die but what a legacy to leave behind. Fair thee well fair maiden, my left hand will forever remember you. |
