Why is it we are taught things that are so very often misinformation, compared to actual reasons?
For example:
At school I was taught that a spaceship entering our atmosphere from out of space gets hot due to friction, when it is in-fact from the difference in pressure.
A good example of this is the Diesel engine. Diesel is considerable harder to ignite than petrol and is heated in a cylinder through compression of the liquid into a smaller space.
Any other things that you were taught that you have found out to be incorrect? |

A lot of it isn't necessarily wrong, just simplified versions or an over generalisation. Especially in science. When you study at a higher level you sometimes spend a lot of time unlearning the "basic rules" you were previously taught. |

There was much they didn’t teach us at school.
What the Troubles we’re about. Post war immigration. Space, the environment. Economics. Or logic even.
We seemed to be destined either for dead end jobs or unemployment. Fortunately a lot of the lads subverted that. |

^^^This. We tell white lies to Science students all the time.
GCSE - speed equals distance over time.
A level - actually, v² = u² + 2ax (plus two other equations of motion) |

Arithmetic is a good example, I was always shown the long way to work something out. |

"RE but the main one “You won’t be carrying a calculator with you everywhere in the future now will you?”"
very true or "you won't be able to just look this up when you're at work".

I think googling symptoms is still something I won’t do |

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales) |
In fairness to Doctors who google search while at work, they’re more likely to know which websites to trust and will do a better job at interpreting the data they find. I don’t think they read “Beryl’s” post on Facebook.

"Sitting on radiators doesn’t give you piles "
I think also eating crusts or the burnt bits doesn’t give you curly hair.
And the wind changed and so did my face, it was never frozen that way |

My schooling was long before any sex education was considered but I have always for some reason remember the RE teacher telling us not to worry about the size of our penis because they would all be the same size after a few years lol. |

You my friend
Diesel engines work by compressing only air, or air plus residual combustion gases from the exhaust (known as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)). Air is inducted into the chamber during the intake stroke, and compressed during the compression stroke. This increases the air temperature inside the cylinder to such a high degree that atomised diesel fuel injected into the combustion chamber ignites. With the fuel being injected into the air just before combustion, the atomized diesel fuel is not liquid as liquid diesel can't be compressed.
The spacecraft re entry converts the crafts kenetic energy into heat energy through gas friction. |

I always believed this so looked it up. Frictional heating plays a small part but apparently the dominant effect is the compression of the gas a meteor (or space ship) is passing through by the hypersonic shock wave ...
I knew in the event of a massive impact like the one that possibly wiped out the dinosaurs there would be a massive firestorm triggered by this compressed air. Never really connected this to normal meteorite burnout.
