Russian president Vladimir Putin has authorised a "special military operation" in eastern Ukraine
Boris Johnson has released the following statement:
I am appalled by the horrific events in Ukraine and I have spoken to President Zelenskyy to discuss next steps.
President Putin has chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack on Ukraine.
Was this mornings press release.... thoughts? Queries? How will this change the world? |

"We didn't really do much over Crimea.
Plus, I don't trust NATO any more than I trust Putin. Western expansionism is a genuine concern. "
No in 2014 we didn't, however 8 years on is this something that needs revisited? He has broken peace accords, Ukraine yes was once part of the Soviet Republic but it has as a country done so for years.
I'm sure the last time there were something like 14,000 deaths... do we really need to see more bloodshed? |

Agreed. Most of the issues in the world can be traced back to the Wests involvement in foreign politics; especially in the Middle East, with Iran being one such example

"And nato and USA promised not to move east to Russia borders "
No it didn’t. This is just factually incorrect.
There are no agreements to this.
Even Gorbachev says such a promise was never made.
And sovereign countries choosing to join a defensive pact primarily because they are scared of Russian interference and it is the only way to secure their independence. That is hardly invading.
The consequences of not joining Nato are being made clear to all those former Warsaw pact nations by the events in Ukraine today.

This may make me really ignorant but I haven't taken in anything so far about what's going on.
I suppose now may be the time to pay attention.
All it makes me feel is depressed and powerless. And really very sad for those displaced and those who will die and those come into harms way. |

People self hating and self loathing. Without the US and nato, there will be many wars started by countries like Russia and China. Yet the Americans and English hate themselves like some of the people in this post. |

He'll go into Ukraine, take the bits he wants under the guise of "denazification" you know for the good of the world. While at the same time showing off his might.
Tens of thousands will die for this show of strength.
We'll sanction all the Russian goods we all buy.....you know.....all that caviar and vodka (how will they cope). Then we'll twig that they have a huge amount of gas and oil that we need. We'll say "Vlad, you're a very very naughty boy. We don't condone what you've done in the Ukraine. But can we have some oil please......ooooh yes you do look manly riding that horse....anyway, about that oil" |

The consequences of this invasion are potentially catastrophic. If the other world leaders who have been condemning Putin decide to react with military force, then this is world war 3. We should all be very concerned as Putin appears to have become unhinged. He will deploy nuclear weapons against anyone who attacks Russia without a second thought. This is a repeat of what started ww2. Invasion of a sovereign state. The world must do something very quickly to remove Putin. |

That's exactly the problem, we DO have normal people in charge. People really are not nice by default, and rarely by choice.

While I can't and won't say what the intent behind his joke is, dark humour and jokes are a coping mechanism, to make a joke out of war is not frightening, it is a valid human response and no less than being appalled by war is.
There is an actual (fairly common) reaction of laughing at death. It is almost involuntary that when death is talked about the response is to laugh. It's not malicious or anything like that but the mind needing to release the tension and stress of the subject. |

Agreed. He's obsessed with rebuilding the Soviet Union and lost any measure of self control he might have had previously.
Don't forget about China, they can use this distraction to push their own agenda, particularly against the US. Or ally with Russia if NATO get serious about military retaliation. Xx |

I said it on another thread, Ukraine already has a lot of street children who are addicted to glue and vulnerable to sexual exploitation. I hate to think many more will end up the same. If the whole country erupts in a war zone then they are genuine refugees I would happy for us to take in, not economic migrants travelling halfway across the world to leech off us |

It's always puzzled me how dictators always seem to want to have a veil of an excuse. In this case it's de-Nazification. In Hitler's case it was a false-flag attack on a German radio station that meant he just had to invade Poland. They never seem to say "we just want to invade and take over". That's what everybody else thinks. Why don't they just say that? |

He's not likely to say 'I want to recreate the Soviet Union' out loud as every other former member would know they are a target.

Chinas real goal here is to buy half of Russia when their economy tanks.
They can’t make a move on Taiwan, it’s far too risky and China doesn’t want a war, they want an economical win. |

I wonder if the well publicised modernisation of Russia nuclear delivery capability and changes in nuclear doctrine is all part of this wider game? Has implying that he has less qualms over the use of nuclear weapons and that Russia is far more capable been a tool of this longer land grab game? Simply because he knows everyone is fearful (rightfully so) of coming to direct blows with Russia and it escalating into a nuclear war. I suspect Putin is of the mind we will avoid direct conflict at all cost and thus will keep testing the waters of what he can get away with bit by bit. I doubt Russia will have problems flogging it's fosil fuels to other states and could emerge stronger with new customer and infrastructure to supply them in time. I don't think there's a lot we can do about it. I would probably aim my efforts in undermining his popular support at home. Although regime change (especially in a nuclear state) carries risks too. |

Even the KGB thought that he was dangerous, all those years ago. You know that feeling you get when, "this is bad I don't think this is a good idea, it might be a tad risky"? Well, that voice in his head is very quiet indeed.

Well apparently he has cancer so thats explains his stance plus there's now a massive bounty on his head so only a matter of time till hes taken out if not by someone in his government. And if that happens it might be a wake up call for china and north korea to buck there ideas up or suffer the same fate. Its about time we rid world of these communist regimes enough is enough. |
