Remembering the great storm of 87....25yrs ago today !!

Living on the south coast at the time in the brunt of it all, i remember exactly where i was, what i was doing and where i was.
After leaving a party we drove home and i remember picking our cat up as i thought it was a bit windy lol. Went off to bed to be woken to a sound like a bomb going off. The wind had ripped our tiles off of our newly furbished restaurant and the air had got into the attic blowing out from inside both attic windows. We went down stairs and hid under the dinning room tables because we really thought that we were being attacked by someone and not something.
We woke to find absolute devastation very where.The roof was everywhere our new fence had gone letting the dog out on to the road and she got run over and killed.
Next doors summerhouse was in our garden folded neatly with the roof on the top of it ( which the insurance man had for himself)... Bad day all round but one for the history books.
Can any of you tell me what it was like for you and how did you cope??? |

Blimey was it that long ago. I was just at school then, living in the east end of London we got some of it and I remember the big horse chestnut at the end of the road being blown over and landing on the abulance station. Fortunately there was nobody there as they were all out on calls. I slept all the way through the storm and never heard a thing lol x |

I remember I was a young recruit in basic army training. We spent the night put in a wood, trees were crashing down around us and we didn't really know what was happening.
It was only once we got back to camp we found out how bad it had been. lol Those were the days. |

Was only a year old then and not even a good swimmer, but yes i do remembering reading about it at school.....  |

I remember the next morning driving from Aldershot to Hindhead took me four hours....did not think the damage was that bad until i hit the country roads and was met with utter devastation,you could not see the road surface,just covered in trees,branches and rubbish. |

I was riding home from school and got blown into the kerb
Straight over the handlebars of my beloved bmx, landed badly on my wrist and broke it
Hurt like a bastard and I was still about three miles from home. Ended up sat in A&E for about four hours with my Grandfather 
The road on which it happened is called "Hard Lane"  |

Blimey 25 years? We lived in Kent near sevenoaks which became one oak.
The tiles off the roof flew off and landed on to my 6 day old Ford Escort XR3 company car.
A guy about 20 doors up from us climbed onto the roof to stop his tiles flying off, he was blown off the roof and suffered severe injuries. What a mad night that was.
Luckily we were warned by Mr Fish to expect a little bit of wind but ...not hurricane force.. famous last words lol ! |

It was the day before we got married  . My outfit was in the back bedroom and the wind tore the roof off that part of the house and let water in, we had to do a rescue mission to get it out lol.
My dad bless him was on the roof of their house just before we got married putting tiles back on. A lot of our guests couldn't make it and our honeymoon night was spent in a hotel without electricity not that we needed light to see what we were going to be doing lol but we had a blooming good day and are still here 25 years later to tell the tale 
Anyway tomorrow is our 25th wedding anniversary and we will be starting on teh champagne very early, any posts from me should be disregarded after about mid day |

I remember it very well, kind of. It was on the night of my birthday, and I had been out on the piss with my mates and downed a bottle of Woods rum.
I woke up the next morning and in the flats where I lived there were broken windows, damaged cars and carnage everywhere. I wondered what the fuck me and my mates had done on the way home!!!
At the time I was working for my families landscaping business. We had given loads of quotes in the past for tree surgery. The phone rung of the hook for days with people wanting trees cleared that had fallen across their drives etc. We worked our bollocks off for weeks and made a small fortune! |

I was working at my Grand parents vehicle dismantlers yard. We had to park the cranes at far end of the yard and lower the Jibs to the floor when we came the next day lost part of the roof to the building and nearly all the car stacks had been blown over was total chaos for best part of a week. |

I remembered it well.
Thought the windows were going to cave in as it was so windy during the night.
The next morning was eerily silent.
The image of only one oak left standing at Seven Oaks will stay with me forever.

We were living on the south coast at the top of a hill with basically nothing between us and the sea. I was only 12 at the time but I remember total carnage.
Trees, Sheds, Roofs everywhere. Blocks of flats with one whole side missing. Chimneys going through roofs. And the high street full of boats blown up from the beach.
And the usual idiots out helping themselves to stuff in shops that had lost their windows.

Oh I was on a family holiday on the Norfolk broads moored up in the middle knowhere just outside beccles, was a rough night I tell you!!!
The sun rose and there we were stern out middle of the river attached to the only tree standing for miles around, scary night I never forget!! |

our next door neighbour went out in her full length nightie to get her dog in as he ran off, the wind blew her nightdress right up in the air over her head and sort of pinned her arms so all she coudl do was try and make her way back to teh house completely naked except for her night dress covering her face and arms |

Remember it very well. I attended a social evening in the wilds of mid-Sussex at a farmhouse. Driving over Ditchling Beacon on my way there on a sea of mud and water washing down the hill I should have known better but pressed on. It was a pyramid-style scheme called 'Airline' where money was at stake so all normal reasoning went out the window. There was a power cut and the event came to an end. I have never known anything like the drive back home through tree-lined country lanes. Got home in the early hours and sat downstairs with candles and my wife and 18 month old son whilst the roof sounded as if it was coming off. Luckily no major damage but managed to get a new garden wall. |

I was only six, but still remember it very clearly. We barely had a roof left and I'll never forget all the trees that were uprooted. I remember walking with my mum an her friend to our house, I was holding both their hands and glad I was, as I was picked up by the strength of the wind!!! Thought it was great at the time! That memory and sensation will never leave me. |

For some reason, Michael Fish was not at all happy about being reminded of his wittering the night previous to the hurricane (Don't know who told you that, but there's not going to be any hurricane tonight) on BBC South East news last night - ha ha! Miserable git!
Anyway, I remember sleeping right through it, waking up the next morning and trying to get to work. I lived in Gravesend then, and worked in Sittingbourne. I got as far as Rainham, Kent when the traffic finally ground to a complete halt. Then a guy a few cars up the queue came along wanting to know if we were game for trying a 'different route' to follow the A2. About 10 cars started out at Upchurch diving down the lanes, until we got to a sharp bend around which was an 8' dia tree across the road. 'Oh bum'.. we thought.. Then another guy said he thought he knew a route across the fields! so off we all went in desperation, like a cross between The Dukes of Hazzard and the end sequence of Benny Hill! It took me 9 hours to drive 18 miles, got to work only to be told they were closing the firm early and would be closed next day too. Jeeeeez!  |

My sister and I were living around the corner from where we are now. There was a huge old Lime tree in the back garden creaking and groaning and all the windows rattled the night way.
I got up to go to work as normal the next morning and my sister begged me not to go out there. I left the house and all looked ok - just very windblown with leaves everywhere. I got in the car and got onto the main road, all quiet and not the normal morning traffic. I got to Camden and found a great big tree blocking part of Camden Road! Then more branches and trees and bits of roofing. I got to the office and the alarm was going and absolutely no one came into to work but they couldn't call either as the phone lines were down. Strange day |

Was at work but told to drive around and clear what broken branches we could from our sites. Stopped outside my workmate`s house and was watching the wind twist an apple tree like someone trying to pull a cork from a bottle! Rescued a lorry driver from the cab of his overturned lorry! Very scary day but I did alright for firewood for a bit!  |
