Poor spelling and grammar!

A Sunday morning bug bear!!! Why oh why do people use such poor spelling and grammar in messages! I find it a real turn off, particularly “hows uss”. Anyone else put off? Or am I being anal?

It's supposed to be the modern way of talking, to be honest if I get a message in 'text' speak I just delete!!

If they can't put the effort into a 3 line message what effort will they put into a meet?

I admit I'm really bad at spelling!

I switched off the autotype features on my phone as it was annoying me with americanisms and now can't type for shit!!

this took a few efforts.

I hate short speak like "u" abd "4" etc..

Text talk and just general lack of any real effort yes

Bad spelling not so much, taking into account how many people I know are dyslexic and struggle with this on the daily and are very well educated people I feel it's a very minor issue x

I think we all have varying levels of ability when it comes to grammar and spelling. I get a bit mixed up with apostrophes sometimes, have no idea about colons and semi-colons and I'm a bit dodgy with hyphens. I do twitch a bit at should of and could of and had to resist taking a pen to a sign in a shop that proudly announced a "stationary sale" . On the whole though it doesn't put me off people, we tend to write how we speak.

Some can’t help bad spelling so that dosent put me off

Shorting things dose even though I understand the true meaning behind it

The 25-38 generation now

We are the msn text generation and start off the Twitter generation

MSN and text was limited to 175 letters at the time per text or per msn message

So we would shorten stuff down to accommodate that so we could fit more in to a message

For some they didn’t grow out off this

Then Twitter came along in 2009 with the same limit to 175 per tweet

Witch sent everyone back in to that msn state again off shorting stuff to fit the limits

The mix of people on here means that you will always have those who struggle with spelling and grammar.

It’s not fab etiquette to correct them, you don’t know their circumstances. Best to just let it go over your head.

One of my brothers is severely dyslexic and his spelling is all over the place. However he is so skilled at his trade that when he asked at an interview what the pay was they told him that when someone like him turns up he tells them how much he wants.

Poor spelling and grammar is one thing, txt speak another.

Txt speak is a definite red flag. Poor spelling and grammar can be too but it's better than those that make little effort and the conversation ends up being one-sided.

At the end it's just another personal preference

You do realise if someone has a spelling or grammar difficulty, even reading back what has been written, it will normally always look correct to them still.

I love bad spelling and grammar when done right. Me and a friend used to leave notes around work with awful grammar and spelling on purpose. It was actually quite challenging.

Absolutely this... typos, spelling and grammar do bug me, but I am far from perfect, so try not to judge.

Text speak is lazy in my eyes and I don't like huge chunks of text will no punctuation at all... not easy to read.

I've mentioned this before but a teacher friend received a note from a disgruntled parent asking that her child not be made to do pe in "bear feet". The thought of some poor child galumphing round in shorts and enormous furry feet still makes me laugh

Thanks and yes seems to tie back to what we were brung up on as teens and stuff has stuck around

Being dyslexic I couldn’t manage without the spelling thingy on my phone which guesses what word you are after and spells it for you so I really do not understand why there is so much bad spelling on the forums or indeed in messages.

The apps are there to help you not hinder you so why not use them.

Probably a re-write of ‘not at all keen on text speak in messages!’ I understand some have dyslexia. It’s more text talk is annoying. I never ask for a written piece of work when I meet people! I’m perhaps just too old for this young tech generation!

I am actually articulate in person and writing official emails etc, but on social media and Fab lately been making lot of typos and grammatical mistakes. I think as I am under stress with family issues, plus typing on phone. In case people think I cannot communicate properly haha.

On a side note, I do not instantly judge people how they type as some may have a disability etc

Even that is an incorrect acronym.

I hate text speak, phones and computers will predict your words and, they will spell the words correctly.

All to often commas are used as full-stops, grrrrrrr

The tech available for people with dyslexia is fantastic, especially the dictate functions.

It's not being smug, it's just something that differentiates you both. Tea/coffee, smoker/non smoker, blonde/brunette, short/tall. Not everyone has to like/agree with how others do things, that's called free choice.

I just find people that treat people with disrespect due to the spelling or grammar are a bit of a bullying attitude boils my piss

Being very attentive to spelling, punctuation and grammar was fundamental to the work I used to do. I’m also a geek about the nuts and bolts of how languages work.

I don’t mind on Fab, and in most circumstances generally, though. So long as its pretty understandable.

Also, it may be that people struggle in that area, have dyslexia etc. I’m a usless mechanic, but I’d be a bit miffed if someone who was an expert was rude to me about it!

I admit that I do struggle a bit with text that doesn’t have paragraphs; I switch off then. Paragraphs make reading so much easier.

As many said, there is a big difference between 'text speak' and poor spelling or grammar. Although I don't like the former, I will not make an immediate judgement but may subsequently do so, depending on futther communication. The latter is a totally different matter as many people may lack skills in that area and I will definitely not judge. On a personal level, I am comfortable with my spelling and grammar but I do find myself having to delete and re-post comments when the predictor messes it up on ocassion. There are far worse things that will annoy me much more about someone. For instance, a sense of entitlement, an air of superiority, rude manners, discrimination and lack of care and compassion are certainly far worse attributes in my opinion.

Notwithstanding the points made on issues such as dyslexia and or dyspraxia, all of which are valid and salient I do feel that general standards or written communication are falling.

Recently I had need to employ a graduate to embark on a period of post graduate training leading to a professional qualification. I invited letters of application supported by a comprehensive CV. Given that all applicants had just finished or were nearing the end of a four year degree course the standard of the English, grammar and spelling was poor.

Given the software available to assist in preparing and submitting a letter of application and CV the standards were simply not good enough.

There are many reason for bad spelling and grammar.

Most is self generated due to using phone key pads and predictive text algorithms.

You also have the cross over text speak mixed with general grammar, which also is phone driven.

You find grammar generally is more important to those who are older.

The pace is faster for more nimble fingered young ones and they have a completely different language developed.

The problem is the crossover of generations.

I myself like good grammar. But I am also old and type on a phone with a pointy finger... (old skool stylee).

DR is a bit like the Grammar Police sometimes, certain things can be very frustrating. They're, there and their; your and you're; to, too and two being some of the popular ones.

However, some people have a genuine reason such as dyslexia so shouldn't be judged alone on their grammar errors. Also, let's not forget, many of us are using mobile devices or tablets with Auto-Incorrect enabled just to make us look silly when we trust it without proof reading...

Txt spk tho, is inexcusable. We're all adults here.

A good book to read for grammar fans is "Have You Eaten Grandma?"

According to official statistics '16.4% of adults in England, or 7.1 million people, can be described as having 'very poor literacy skills.'

and

1 in 10 people have some form of dyslexia according to the NHS.

I rather be compassionate than judgemental when I don't know people's circumstances. Content matters more than anything else as does intelligence, rather than spelling, syntax and grammar in my opinion. That does not mean we should devalue their importance but be mindful of the underlying causes and embrace other forms of expression and ability. Choosing to use text speak, as previously said by many, is different and people may choose to embrace or not. I am not fond of it but will not dismiss or belittle anyone on that basis alone. I have a choice not to interact if I so wish. Just my humble opinion.

It is a handy filter. Helps filter out those who might not be stimulating conversationally or too lazy to make much of an effort. Those kind of messages go directly in the bin. Some will think this is judgemental - so be it.

Formally the first is correct, but so often multiple usage of the exclamation mark is used for added emphasis, but isn’t correct. I’m very sure I’d feel complimented with this statement; more so with the second? I’m not sure. But I certainly don’t think I’d respond by saying thank you for your compliment. By the way, you only need one exclamation mark (or two if you’re writing in Spanish, but it needs to be an upside down one at the beginning - ¡Ay caramba!).

I do enjoy something well written. That said, in this lifestyle, we have had some amazing times with people from all walks of life. From stay at home parents, people in education, professional workers, white collar, blue collar and whatever Socioeconomic class they belong to etcetera.

People who wouldn’t be a touch point or typically you wouldn’t mix with in your personal vanilla lives.

So whilst I enjoy a well written message. I do try to remain open when conversing over text.

One liners aren’t exactly exciting, so I do try to decipher whether some people are just casting a net, or it isn’t exactly their skill set to articulate by hand; they may find it better to communicate orally (cheap pun there x2).

Nevertheless, I’ve seen messages where people articulate very well but not always fluently in terms of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

I do overlook text speak, auto correct features changing words, not proof reading before sending, dyslexic authors, swingers who are not writing in their native tongue and so forth.

Communication is the key, and this has afforded us some absolutely great nights. And this doesn’t always mean that it has to be comprehensive, sometimes short and sweet but concise is also good. I do personally admire the succinct writers.

And some of these writers, not wordsmiths, not lexicons; Shakespeare, Wilde and Orwell are totally safe here. But my, can they fuck and party!

To the point where I can safely say “The sword is mightier than the pen”

Language and meanings change frequently - things that used to be "super", "spiffing" and "good" are now "wicked", "bad" and "sick". An orange almost came to be a norange, until good sense prevailed. I don't care about poor spelling as long as the content of the message is good and she has nice tits.

I post with spelling mistakes, autocorrect and not having a quick read before I post is usually the culprit.

If this is enough to put someone off then fine, if you're that picky about things like that then we're probably not a good match anyway.

I also have spelling mistakes from auto correct and typing fast as time is precious. The contestant text speak message after message is a bit of a turn off. But each to their own "

You can see the difference between dyslexia and lazy typing, one you can work with as you see the person is doing their best and the other is a simple delete.

Text speak used to be understandable when you paid per 159 letters in each text message whereas now there is no reason for it and you also have autocorrect so there is little excuse. Add to the fact that you have to train autocorrect to accept your misspelled word so it's hard to see the reasoning behind still doing it as it is lagging behind what technology easily allows and says more about the user than anything else.
