I've suffered for years and take Minocycline daily. Other things that really work are the Garnier products with Salicilic Acid and Blueberry extract. Or you could apply an asprin facepack twice a week.

I have used panoxyl and found it very effective, you need something containing benzyol peroxide which is the active ingredient.

Benzoyl peroxide is often too aggressive, it left me blistered and red raw. I visited a skin clinic in Litchfield and had laser treatment every other month with a salicilic acid peel on the months in between, it worked great but was very expensive.

Another tip I was given by a dermatologist was to use as hot water as I could stand when washing as it helps to kill the bacteria.

What medications have you tried?

Minocycline and Doxycycline work great and a long term 'cure' is Isotretonin but it carries some nasty side effects.

I only use it when i have a couple of spots that would not normally go,my back seems to be the place where they occur mainly if i have shaved then i get a few.Panoxyl works by peeling the skin gradually and drying it out, almost like sunburn does but it does not hurt like sunburn.

Just ask at your local pharmacy as you cannot buy it of the shelf but they store it in the back and you will not need a prescription.

Keep the pores as unblocked as possible, use non-condomengenic make-up, steam regularly and don't use anything oily on your skin. Above all else, don't let it get you down, it used to get me really depressed until I decided that its the person inside that matters. X

It certainly cleared up the awlful teenage years for him.

My gf uses duac which helps immensely. A "remedy" I saw on the Internet whilst looking for things to help her is urine. I haven't tried it myself, nor has she but many people swear by it. Not sure if I could put my piss on my face even if I knew it would help but thought I'd mention it!

Well after years of problem skin I can say that I've finally found something that works regarding the washing bit.

L'Ocittan by L'Ocittane soap, plus then use use the aftershave balm of the same product. Makes your back like a baby's botty

It's in the men's range but I'm sure some of their other stuff will work as well, try one of their soaps or body washes plus one of their moisturisers for a few days and then see if you notice the difference. They are pretty expensive though but are 100% natural.

Lush is just a big con and is no more natural than most of the stuff on the shelves, just has a price premium.

Penhaligon's stuff is also natural and works well but is very expensive.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I had acne when i was 30, as hormones tend to go a bit nutty then. I used Retinol A cream, which helped. It went of its own accord after a couple of months.

One other non-medicinal antibiotic to help treat the skin might be to apply a salt poultice or wash the skin in salty water. Shouldn't be a major problem if you're on multiple medicines really, and it's a very safe, very natural (very underrated too) way of killing the germs that cause the inflammation.

Too much cleansing can just make things worse, as make the natural oil over active, I tried 'proactiv' last year, and to me it has made a huge difference! And I still use it today, I would honestly give it go if you haven't already.

I use Panoxyl, it is cheaper to buy over the counter than on prescription.

Would advise to use it before going to bed as it tends to make your face go really red when first applied.

Only need a very small amount as it dries out your skin.

Has improved my skin.

I know, that's why I bought my first batch when I was in the states last year! I was sceptical as well!

Now I use it every day, and I've noticed a huge difference.

PM me if you want, and I'll let you know where I get mine, difinitely recommend, but it's not cheap x

I've found the most effective way to use benzoyl peroxide products is to wash with Simple foaming cleanser, then apply the benzoyl peroxide and then use a natural moisturiser, Simple moisturiser is ok too.

Manuka honey also helps too.

Good luck, I know not everything works for everybody's skin but I'm sure at least one of the suggestions on this thread will help you

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I developed acne with the menopause. I dab with witch hazel most of the time and that it fine. Every once in a while it gets out of hand and I have to do something more drastic, like medication. I have found that Clinque make-up is better than trying to wear other things. Other things seem to set the skin to getting prone for a bout of acne.

Ask to be referred to a Dermatology Consultant, GPs are always reluctant to do this and make up all sorts of excuses...GPs are great when you have a sore throat or for relatively easy to treat stuff, if its more complicated then always ask for a referral. I know people that have suffered for years as they got put off by GP, ask and ask again. xxx

The advice Femme has given is probably the best advice on here. GPs will sometimes base their decisions with cost in mind. They have a good all round knowledge of everything but its basic and they're not specialists. Ask to be referred to a dermatologist who will work out a treatment plan

This has been a brilliant thread to read as I got the usual teenage spots when I was young and here I am at 51 still suffering from black and some white heads but I did think I would grow out of them. I know its not as bad as acne and therefore some of the suggestions might be too strong and unnecessary but any suggestions would be appreciated as I thought by now, I would have lovely smooth skin, instead its scarred and discoloured too. I have never bothered much with make up as I never felt it covered it up enough, found some things too greasy or just sit on my skin which means I don't use moisturiser either as I don't like that feeling

Garnier make a wonderful line of products that contain 2% salicilic acid (Aspirin) and extract of blueberry. If suffered with chronic acne since I was 14 and I swear that this is the only over the counter product that A) works B) doesn't irritate my skin.

You can also try an Aspirin facepack twice a week. The recipe for them is all over the net and they are extremely effective and natural.

It's a dangerous drug and not as effective as heralded. I was on it for 24 weeks (8 longer than recommend). Not only did it not work it also gave me very painful blisters on my scalp. It can also only be prescribed by a dermatologist not by a GP and requires a blood test every 8 weeks and dietary restrictions.

They claim its 90% effective on all the people who have taken it, but for me it was crap and Minocycline has been far more effective.

Have you seen the mortality rates for Accutane users? It's shocking.

Because its not a cure as such more a treatment. In all honesty there is not cure or magic bullet for acne, just various treatments. The trick is finding the right one that works for you. Doctors, in my experience, don't seem to care much about it, which is sad because when its really bad there's a lot of emotional distress that comes with it because of the social stigma attached to acne, which is often worse for adult sufferers.

From my experience and what multiple dermatologists have told me, food has a minimal effect on the skin. Acne is caused by subacious oil blocking the pores and becoming infected with bacteria. Food has little relevence to the production of the skins natural oils.

I am extremely lucky that I have never suffered with this problem, I get an occasional spot when it is "time of the month", I feel for anyone who suffers.

My only tip, and not sure if that is why I have no problems or just lucky, when I take my make off, I never use cleanser or anything similar, except for eye makeup remover.

For my face, I use water only, with a cotton pad and rub in a circular potion.

I find some of the lotions and potions they have available on the market could be attributable to further problems.

That also works because the steam opens the pores and the heat kills the offending bacteria. The skin clinic I attended in Litchfield suggested something similar to me. They also suggested that when I shave I use the hottest running water possible.

Steam can work wonders but initially can make it look worse until the pores are unblocked.

You're dead right there...

Some products make the skin too clean and strip too much oil from the skin, allowing the bacteria to spread faster.

Best advice which I will endorse. Had acne albeit mild at the age of 36, had a variety of topical application prescribed but in the end it took Isotretinoin (Accutane) to sort it.

Hope you get it sorted.

This drug is usually prescribed after a longer ( 6 months or so) of antibiotics...Women who take it have to enter into a pregnancy prevention programme, and need to go and take a pregnancy test every few weeks, they also have to agree to two forms of contraception, unless they are celibate, they will sign a form to say so. As there is a huge risk to an unborn. As you say the common side effects are quite long...ie....sore throat, dryness of all bodily fluids, highly sensitive skin, and a risk of sunburn, not something to be unter taken without knowing all of the facts...a dermatologist will guide people through it, having said all that it does work.

After my experience with it I wouldn't recommend it. It only works short term anyway and you can't take or use anything for six months after using it, so if it doesn't work you're screwed.

Like I stated earlier, the success rate is around 90% in the short term. Many people need a second treatment after 6 months and for me it not only didn't work it actually made things worse.

It's all about finding the right treatment for each individual and getting good advice. I've been using Minocycline for years now and found its the ONLY thing that works for me.

Like I stated earlier, the success rate is around 90% in the short term. Many people need a second treatment after 6 months and for me it not only didn't work it actually made things worse.

It's all about finding the right treatment for each individual and getting good advice. I've been using Minocycline for years now and found its the ONLY thing that works for me."

It must be a huge relief, so many people are discriminated against because of skin conditions, im glad you found a treatment that works. xx

"Isotretonin but it carries some nasty side effects.

Thanks. I went through years of hell with it and tried pretty much everything. I still get outbreaks from time to time but as I stated previously I use the Garnier range of products that contain salicilic acid to help combat them and if I've not got any an aspirin facepack twice a week works wonders.

"Roacutane it's worked for me I was on it for 4 months I had terrible acne years ago I tried everything on the shelves and everything that the doc gave me made it worse so they referred me to a determologist

They claim its 90% effective on all the people who have taken it, but for me it was crap and Minocycline has been far more effective.

Have you seen the mortality rates for Accutane users? It's shocking."

I used to suffer terrible from spots and it near on destroyed my social life and I was too ashamed to go to the shops or outdoors , I tried everything but eventually took Roactuane and it worked for me ,I think it has an almost 100% record after a 2nd course , i went private and it cost a fair bit for consultation , tests and the medicine , only prob is is that if you doc won't give you other stuff , no way will he give you that .

Havin done all I've tried my best advice is to go back to the doctor and say you want to be referred to a dermatologist (which i had some that), tell him is destroying you , if you have to over play it do it, say your strugglin to cope and having bad thoughts but don't leave without the referral , otherwise you you'll keep trying stuff that works for other people but not you, a dermatologist is an expert and that's what you need

Hope this helps
