Watching a rerun of the BBC show about Great Britons. They came up with a shortlist of 10. Churchill won in the end, who would you have voted for?

Diana, Princess of Wales
Queen Elizabeth I

Isaac Newton

I would have voted for Brunel. I am amazed that Diana made it on the list. The programme is 10 years old, so doubt she would do nowadays |

It was a Department of Defense funded project, but was not to my knowledge, developed specifically for or by the US Navy. Also, the Internet and intranets are different things.

Well as far as I'm concerned Churchill is a great but not the greatest in my mind, for every year the majority of us all go on holiday near and far when we look to the skies we can invariably see a plane somewhere in that sky, and it's engines were invented in the U.K by a great British Man - Sir Frank Whittle so my vote goes to him |

No idea how they got to the final 10. Like I said in the OP, how the hell Diana was on there is a mystery.
Maybe bell and Baird only did one invention each, amazing as they were, they were single occurences. Also with Bell, it is disputed if he did invent it or if it was Antonio Meucci.

I don't get Stephen Hawking at all. Here is a man who has put forward contradictory theories many times. Yes, he's man enough to admit he's wrong when other scientists have disproven one of his theories, so he comes up with another one and it's embraced by science as fact until it's disproven again.
Take Big Bang for example. Hawking proposed that the Universe came into existence 14bn years ago as the result of an explosion that emanated from a 'hot and dense state' (wtf does that explain?) and that the Universe has been expanding ever since. By his definition, if the Universe began with an explosion and is still expanding, then at some point the energy from that explosion must eventually subside and the Universe will stop expanding, and then it will begin contracting, eventually collapsing in on itself back into this 'hot and dense state'.
A nice tidy beginning, middle and end. Ta muchly, where's me Nobel award.

If the Universe is expanding, what is it expanding into? What occupies the space that the Universe is expanding into, what occupied the space the Universe occupies now? (let's not forget that the Universe is also supposed to be infinite, and if it is then it must already occupy the space it is expanding into).
Now let's have a look at Big Bang. If the Big Bang theory is to be believed then everything there is in the Universe - matter, energy, anti-matter, dark matter etc etc must have it's roots in the Big Bang as you cannot get something from Nothing. Even if everything in the Universe was condensed into something a billion times smaller than an atom it still exists, yes?
My belief is that Nothing doesn't exist. There can never be Nothing, because if Nothing ever existed we wouldn't be here, yet here we are as living proof that Nothing is a paradox.
The Universe IS infinite, it has always been infinite and always will be infinate and it's been around infinately longer than 14bn years but Man seems to have a problem dealing with something that requires no explanation because it has no explanation. It didn't begin and it won't end. It is simply Here.

Credited with 2 of the most useful inventions ever..

I dont know the full list but Brunell is on it and probably the greatest
engineer of his day and a sweaty sock too.
Born in Portsmouth to French father.... what part of him was Jockish?"
Oops got it wrong twice said Brunell when I meant Telford even deleted it and now see I did the same thing again apologies to the late Brunell. |

As a staunce socialist and someone who disagreed with most of mrs Thatchers policies I have to say that I admire the woman. Like her or loathe her,she set her store out and stuck by her principles. A true statesperson in my opinion

Margaret Thatcher took this country from one beleagured by the unions who could bring the UK grinding to a halt if they wished to a country where hard work is rewarded and employers forced to pay a decent wage for an honest day's work.
I never appreciated her when she was in power as I was young and anti-everything at the time. I wish she'd been in power a lot longer instead of being knifed in the back and replaced by John the Grey.
She should definately be on the list. |

Margaret Hilda was the most divisive prime minister of the last century. She is responsible for the lack of social cohesion we find ourselves in now. Her polices and that of her yes men did not do anything except reinforce the class structure in this country. She was responsible for decimating the manufacturing base on which this country was built and if it was not for the Falklands war she would have been a gonna in 1983. |

I do think that Thatcher is probably our greatest post War Prime Minister. Yes, she will always be a polarizing character, but she dragged the country out of the mess that was the 70's.
My family are working class and they definately benifitted from Thatchers policies. My dad nearly lost his home, because of the srikes being called at his work place and his loss of wages. My setdad was a builder and the upsurge in 80's building programmes meant he had work all the time, where as in the 70's he spent a lot of time out of work.
Yes, she was barking mad by the end of her time in power. The Poll Tax was badly thought out. But you have to salute her breaking the unions.
That all said, she would not make my Top Ten.

Maggie decimated Britains long established manufacturing industry in just a few years the woman was only interested in the top 1% and all the rest of the lowlife were there to be trampled the woman was a wicked evil person with no remorse and I hope there is a heaven and hell as she will surely be helping the firtes to burn.
