Cost time and money to make contact. First you needed to buy the contact magazines, then an exchange of letters. The wife and I would spend hours perusing the ads before posting a letter with real pics, mainly Polaroids. Then posting your own ad took time as well. The contact magazines came out monthly so could take a month or so to arrange a meet, so even before you made contact you were pretty careful to make sure the person you were contacting was the one for you. |

Remember it well, especially the Polaroids |

"In the 70's, swinging was done through Key Cubs or Key Parties whereby the male partners dropped their car keys in a basket and the females randomly picked keys out for the purpose of pairing off."
That was how I remember the Key Parties way back in the mid 1960s, happy days. |

I started in the mid 80s and as a previous poster said it was mainly contact mags like Forum and Experience. It was expensive to place an ad and you had to wait at least a month for the replies to come in. I'd say that there were a lot less timewasters then as it did take an effort to hand write a message and obviously send a Polaroid. As a single straight man I would get a few replies and always a couple of couples that I wanted to meet. The ads lasted some time and it was not unusual to get a reply after three months. I had three couples I saw every three to six months. It all went pretty dead circa 2000. Maybe it was because I was fifty |
