Is Martin Lewis a smart arse

I don't think so no. I used to get a bit annoyed by him but then I saw him interviewed and his obvious passion for helping people who struggle with or don't properly understand their finances. He also adores his wife and isn't afraid to show it |

His website is genius. I was on there today. And he is always the first one to explain financial issues in a straightforward way. Eg the £200 govt "loan" for energy costs. |

I love him. He’s saved me so much money over the years & explains in a way everyone can understand. I like the weekly email as you can get exclusive offers for places you were going to shop at anyway. He does a lot for charity too.

He got it wrong.. Badly
Telling people to "do nothing" last year in respect to energy tariffs has cost people dearly.
I ignored this stupid advice and tied a 3yr deal that's literally going to save me 1000's.
He's currently telling people Solar isn't worth it, last year my 5kw system saved me over £900 on gas and electric, yet he is spouting 30 yr payback and not worth it based on false, out of date figures.
At the end of February, Green Energy Grants that were handed to Councils close to new applications.
Within this grant, those earning less than £30k are eligible to apply for 75% discount, those on benefits, 100% against the cost at up to £5000 for Solar PV.
This meant 1000's on low income or benefits could have had free electricity from the roof to power their homes, heat hot water, run additional portable heaters and help Climate Change for almost nothing.
There are other grants such as insulation, double glazing, central heating and he has NOT ONCE suggested it's availability.
Unless you have a current EPC, your out of time for applications as it finishes 28th Feb.
His website is for affiliate payments and I wonder if that's all he is interested in under guise of the "Energy Club". |

I got back a bit because of him during the banking insurance scandal… heck.. I didn’t know about the 60 pound rebate for working from home! … the countless years of cheaper car insurance…
In the job I do we know we are going to be busy if he mentions certain things….
So for as annoying as people find him… his heart is in the right place |

i partly do agree with you so out of touch on many things.
but im aware the solar grant did end so cant agree with you on that one
so on about tariffs i find him anoying its fine for him to quote meter tariffs
but i dont see him having a go for better tariffs for those on a low income
stuck on a token meter
but yeah ive seen the site get it so wrong often |

The Solar Grant is available to apply today.
Search "Cosy Homes Lancashire" as an example. It's listed, I tried to apply last year for Solar Thermal but knocked back on level of income.
Anyone with earnings less than £30k can apply today. CHL is a syndicate of a group of our local councils, unclaimed Grants that finished last year was given.
The only problem now, an EPC is required so although can apply, you'd not get the certificate in time to get the voucher to give the installer.
He seems to have a massive 'beef' about reduction of FIT (Feed In) Tariffs as for some reason, installation of your own Solar 'had' to end with government giving people overpriced rates (even guesstimated) pay back. This is old news and generation today is to reduce bills - not for a cheque 4 times a year.
I imagine this roots from not being able to earn 45p/kwh from the government on his own million pound mansion roof. At 20p+/kwh that the rates are today, it doesn't take a genius to work out that savings are substantial.
He sent a negative email out this week, again completely out of touch claiming Solar isn't worth it.
His figure's based on exporting 2750kwh over 12 months at 4p/kwh earning £110. Why export valuable power for a pittance when it could be used to heat hot water as I do?
He claimed batteries are inherently expensive with 10 year payback. Wrong, a battery storing 2750kw a year to use at night is a saving of £500 per year at today's rates. That's justifiable to get a 5yr loan and offset savings to pay it back. Lithium Ion batteries will last over 25yrs.
To just write off something that is viable, is affordable and at present, 75% cheaper to many, is a fail.
Bank Charges and PPI were well underway in Internet forums long before he picked up the baton. By the time he was reporting it, I'd had well over £22k refunded.
He's made his money using information already out there and taken it to the many, which is no bad thing but many things he says are not 100% correct.
I've fixed electric at 19p/kw and gas at 4.9p/kw for 3yrs at the time he was saying do nothing. I now have 3yrs to improve usage of Solar to reduce bills to £300 per year- all due to Solar.
WARNING: OFGEM are looking to surcharge electricity between 16:30 to 18:30 to reduce load on the Grid at tea time, making it at least 35p/kw for those 2 hours.
Octopus are starting a trial of reducing that 2 hour period consumption by 50%, they'll give you the next two hours for free.
Would it not be better to subsidise batteries to reduce demand at those times to balance the Grid? |

"He could save me money if he shared his wife lol
Seen her on his TV show, now she is really annoying.
Rather not lol.
Better not watch the tech show 'Click' on the BBC news channel then!"
Rather not, don't know what she's like on her own but them working together was a strange viewing experience. |
