In many ways, the public do decide
His success is based on his popularity and ability to bring a crowd
If he keeps selling seats and getting eyes on the TV he won’t be cancelled
I don’t think he’s funny. But I know it was a joke. Leave it at that |

I just don't understand why oh why comedy needs to punch down instead of punching up, there is so much to punch up for. Why make fun of the murder of millions of people saying it's something positive when you could be making fun of Bezos. |

Yeah, I know. I was referring to the "Disgusted from Bognor Regis" types who go out of their way to find something to be offended at.
I'm more offended and outraged at the prospect of kids going hungry because their parents are skint because of the cost of living increase. Or wee pensioners freezing in their homes.
But that's not woke enough I think. |

I agree with that, to a point. Context and intent as always is a huge deal. Some people are just malicious and hide behind "it's a joke" or "that's my opinion" they do it to intentionally provoke offence.
Jimmy's joke actually made a really good point, it was in a way shock and awe. Everyone "forgets", "ignores", or just does not know that the other things done by the Nazi's. He actually brought it to the attention of others that didn't have a fucking clue about the Romani HC.
While he didn't do it to help or elevate anyone, he was taking just as much of the piss out of people that look down upon another community.
That's what satire comedy is! |

I suspect we could watch a whole bunch of comedians and find something offensive should we choose to do so. I enjoy comedy that is a bit dark and on the edge. Was it a joke, yes. Was it in good taste, no. Was it funny, no. Move on. |

I can understand this point, but I struggle to agree with it.
A less contentious example would be ‘the pub landlord’. While Al Murray has been clear that the character is a piss-take of the flag-shagging little Englander type, his shows are often packed with exactly the kind of people he’s taking the piss out of, laughing along at the xenophobia and misogyny rather than laughing at the parody.
Re JC, While there’s a case to be made like the one above, I think too many people would be laughing along at the first literal reading of the joke. The substitution test works again here - if the subject of the joke was disabled people rather than the GRT communities, would it have got the same hearty laugh? Almost certainly not. |

Who is anyone to look down on the masses?
They may laugh but who is anyone to judge.
I know kids who don’t even know what a Nazi is.
So if they laughed at a Nazi joke is it their fault? Or the fault of enlightened educators to have failed to spread the word? |

He’s done this particular routine for a reason. It is not a gaff. It has been through through and the fallout and reactions anticipated. He was ‘warning’ audiences about the routine in general - and this joke in particular when he reiterated the ‘warning’ a 3rd time before delivering the punchline - can’t quite figure out what he is/was planning to achieve or the precise point to be made - notoriety, piss off the ‘snowflakes’, a shill to get free speech banned/cancelled, getting out of his Netflix deal? Who can tell?
I speculated on the way back from the show that he was planning to retire and wanted to cause a stir.
Curious why it has taken nearly 4 months for all this fuss to bubble up. |

To be fair often the subject of Carr's is disabled people and it does get laughs. To what extent is it the comedians responsibility to police the humour of those who watch the comedy if their intent to poke fun through parody and satire? As you pointed out many of an audience get the intent and the nuance. Because some idiots don't get it should that mean their humour should be barred? I heard the quote 'Tyranny is the deliberate removal of nuance'. And I have to agree that sort of culture does provide the framework for tyranny to thrive. I think our beef should not be with the material when it's intent and context are not the evil that some take at face value. Our beef should be with those who actually buy into ideas that are being poked fun at and the society/communities that bread them. Let's tackle the ignorance not the comedians who poke fun. Because removing these comedians won't do anything to stop the ignorance. It will deprive those who get the nuance of challenges and questions posed, as well as the laughs. But also outlawing an endless list of things that we are not allowed to say in any context is potentially putting ourselves in a prison of our own creation. |

"So fed up of this cancel culture. Let the public decide with their feet"
Umm… that kind of is what ‘cancel culture’ is. There isn’t some ‘woke’ jury that decides who is cancelled and who isn’t.
‘Cancel culture’ is people being held to account, criticised or challenged. Sometimes businesses will make a decision that the outcry is so much that it’s bad business to keep someone on their books (Louis CK), other times they’ll carry on regardless of how vile the comments/behaviours (Dave Chapelle).
As much as I’d like to cancel Mrs Brown’s Boys on the basis that I just don’t find it funny, there are enough people who do to keep it on the air.
Different folks like different jokes, but “it’s comedy” is a pretty poor shield to hide behind when dishing out hate speech.
Tommy Robinson wouldn’t be any less objectionable if he did his schtick as a set at a cabaret night in a club. |

I never said punches up all comedians make money from laughing at others.. never seen a comedian brave enough to use his power to confront the sick peados that run the Hollywood and music industry.. |

"I just don't understand why oh why comedy needs to punch down instead of punching up, there is so much to punch up for. Why make fun of the murder of millions of people saying it's something positive when you could be making fun of Bezos.
The best form of slating sick elites is Ricky gervais style at the golden globes pointing out all the Hollywood peadophile circles .. absolute genius
Unfortunately the guy also punches down, e.g. insulting trans people (who clearly have had it way too easy thus far)
So your completely dismissing the point I made ?
Refuting. Not dismissing.

Someone suggested punching up is better - gave example of Bezos as a target.
You followed that up with “the best at this is…” and gave your Pizzagate example.
Are you suggesting that targeting the (presumably rich and powerful in your theory) “Hollywood elite paedos” is punching down? |

James, if that’s what you’ve taken from my posts then I’m really sorry to have confused you.
Do you understand what the terms “punching up” and “punching down” mean in relation to comics? |

Why is it the job of comedians to be worthy and expose crime and awful people? They just make us laugh, and some people like dark/trench humour. I watched this on Netflix ages back before some influencer type decided to make a cause out of the clip, frankly I don’t even remember it, it wasn’t the most ‘offensive’ bit of the show, but anyone who watched the show not the clip will know the theme was all about what is comedy, and are there things you can’t joke about. There’s no joke in the world that won’t offend someone, somewhere. |

"Not my fave comedian but regardless a joke is a joke. I hate all this censorship culture BS. The show is literally named 'dark material' what did people expect..

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon |
Because theatre owners, managers and the people that work for them are the public too maybe. And as such, have their own minds and choices to make.
Added to that, if the public in general take issue with the man, the ticket sales or lack of would show that and be bad for their business.
So in essence, yes, and no. |

I think it's a very fine line between a joke and someone saying whatever they like and using the cover of a joke. It's like people that say "it's only banter" to cover up bullying behaviour. |

"In many ways, the public do decide
His success is based on his popularity and ability to bring a crowd
If he keeps selling seats and getting eyes on the TV he won’t be cancelled
I don’t think he’s funny. But I know it was a joke. Leave it at that"
Mostly agree with this, the worlds gone mad I tell ya, MAD |

I think Dave Chappelle said It’s only punching down if you see people as beneath them, which great comedians don’t, they mostly see themselves as privileged social commentators bringing a bit of humour to the brutality of life.
By the way cancel culture isn’t a simple consumer response, because cancel culture is a combination of people who are searching for offense, searching for people they can be offended on behalf of, searching for targets on platforms they can pressure, searching for a “win” because their own lives are so unbelievably destitute of success that all they can do for joy is club together with other outrage merchant and chant outside Spotify or YouTube or Netflix or wherever. |

local, but not too local |
"He's a vile cretin! "
He’s cleverly cynical, but the problem with irony is that people take it at face value.
And from that perspective he could be seen as being no different to the offensive comics of the 1970s and 80s.
Sort of the opposite of Russell Brand really. I think Carr probably is clever, playing with being stupid for effect. |

Oh god I’m defending him here, but the whole point of this “joke” is to hold a mirror up and challenge the innate racism in society. I’ve seen a similar routine done with ginger people, and nobody batted an eyelid.
Except the joke wasn’t as clever as he thought and has apparently misfired.
My problem with Carr is that he deliberately crosses the line and courts controversy for effect. The joke is often that “shock - you can’t say that”.
He promoted the Netflix show with “the joke to get me cancelled is already out there”.
You’re being played. He wanted this.
His core audience won’t care.
Personally, not a fan. |

"I just seen the joke in its entirety. Basically what he joking about is less gypsies, the better. Some would agree and disagree with.
End of the day, it was a joke."
I wonder if the joke is received differently around the country. Maybe it does not travel well? |
