the thing is with the 'specific issue' which we cant discuss, and lets be honest its sadly still going on today..

it was'nt just about one individual, it was endemic in society..

as were many other wrongs..

people say 'we are too PC now', half the time i think some mean 'its not fair cos i cant treat others like shit'..

I don't deny this bad stuff. I remember the lights going out, the rubbish in the streets and the white dog poo.

But there was good stuff too.

Ian Hislop on HIGNFY made an interesting point: there were rumours but people hearing rumours couldn't do much. Those that knew what was happening as a fact should have said something.

I can't think of anyone in this country who would not have known who Jimmy Saville was in the 70s and 80s.

Jim'll Fix It was one of those things most would say is a good memory from the 70s, like Record Breakers and How?

My concern is that I am not sure that much has changed in the media.

Good shout but I believe it was because we all used to go to the butcher, make a donation into his tin for a big old bone and let our hounds demolish the marrow from it.

Now we can't buy this anymore. Shame really, I also found it quite tasty.

The butcher will still give you the bone, you just have to ask in the right way. We love sucking the marrow - too good for the dog.

""A different world to today" - Newsnight discussing that case the BBC need to investigate.

What was good and what was bad back then? Without referencing the case, or we'll disappear."

Lumping the 70s and 8Os together strikes me as being rather odd since the two decades were so different. The 60s and 70s and the 80s and 90s would seem to be more logical.

I do apologise. I will endeavour to ensure logic in the future, especially when basing my thread on a quote.

Things did change quite radically between the 70s and 80s but not for everyone.

no of course not but it was a different time and i dont think any one flt as offended because the guide lines werent there to say what we should be offended at and whats wrong with honesty if you say something that offends theres nothing wrong with a good old appology rather than being ostricised for not being bloody politcly correct

I don't think there is anything wrong with an honest apology at all. About 15 years ago and woman in her 70s at the time was busy telling a gathering of local people and government minister that the problem was the foreigners getting all of the housing. She turned to me and said, for everyone to hear, "I don't mean you dear, I know you grew up round here". Did she mean to offend? Of course not. I could have felt offended if I didn't know her.

Manners are about censoring our words and behaviours. That is all political correctness is to my way of thinking and acting.

Thanks for the comments.

I miss christmas in the 70s but that was obviously because I was a child and it was all so magical then. But you don't see kids on their new bikes in the street christmas morning anymore, or little girls pushing their new prams etc.

The interior of cars were great in the 80s. We had these beaded seat covers which we thought were so cool but were bloody uncomfortable and we used to slip off them. And a banner that went across the windscreen. We had Love Buggy written across ours but most people had their names - Kev & Shaz etc. Bloody brilliant wasn't it

You need to come over here for Christmas morning. The kids run around on their new bikes and play in the park after breakfast present opening and before lunch.

I'm sure you could have a banner on your car with Iconic and people would just nod in respect.

Good stuff: Sally James on ITV Sat morning kids telly - Corrrrrrrrrrrrr! Amount of wanking I did over her (not literally! Me Mum would have spotted it while cleaning the telly!!)

Bad stuff: Getting the cane at school - and I still didn't end up having a BDSM fetish!!

And as for the 'P.C.' debate - it's a combination of 'What dya mean - I can't treat people like crap?' and 'You mean I've actually got to justify what I am doing??', which - in the light of Hillsborough etc etc etc (It's a depressingly long list) is, I feel, a good thing today.

strikes

power cuts"

Now I liked the power cuts in 1973/74. Actually got to be a family for a few hours every other night. And all my schoolmates wanted to come to my house as we were 'old fashioned' and had a - shock-horror! - Parkray, and they had elecrtically controlled gas, which didn't work during a power cut.

"I loved Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes for all the familiar, now really dated stuff.

Telephones with the circular dial. Typewriters that weighed almost as much as a car.

Dodgy hair, moustaches and clothes.

Rara skirts, pixie boots...

I liked the 80's. "

I liked Rah-Rah skirts, cos you were practically guaranteed a shag if you pulled a bird (good only 70's term!) wearing one - even better when my GF went out wearing one as she never bothered with knickers Ah, those were the days.......

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

My sister got the photo albums out this afternoon and there we were... teenage and young adults in the late 70s and 80s. It was a little scary to see that we were wearing things that are in the shops now.

Have you noticed that every other ad at the moment seems to have a 70s or 80s soundtrack?
