So there is this profile that comes up every now and then that states touching distance...how close is touching distance? and they must be seeing my profile as touching distance...this has made me look at my neighbours in different ways..

Reach out, if you touch them. There’s your answer.

The distance thing is very ambiguous.

My wife and I could be logged in to our different accounts in the same room, yet it would say “within 1/4 of a mile”.

No shit Sherlock!

So touching distance could be the same..

I have found the distance thing on here to be not that accurate when it is looking at very close. Many a time the distance is showing less than a mile (which would be in fields), and we mail, they can be three miles away if they disclose their location. It is a useful tool generally though and saves me googling distances when people mail or I am browsing.

It's very god damm accurate sometimes! I have a couple within quarter of a mile, and that freaks me out a bit as I have a fair idea who they are and I'm more than sure they will have clocked me! It's not an issue, we're all adults, but still disconbobulating.

I've also had within a '3 minute walk' earlier,

Like some have said upthread I don't trust the distance thing I've had a few examples when it's been way - it also doesn't update particularly quickly when on the move

Isn't that like the saying "a stone's throw away" isn't it? But then that depends also.. with a slingshot or not? Or what if it lands on the back of a lorry and the lorry crosses the border into France? Lol I'm overthinking this way too much

I’ve had a few within half a mile when I’m at work and can’t resist a quick look and hope it’s someone in the same company (it’s a big site).

I’ve never had it try to be funny though with a metaphor

I'd say within a few hundred feet. I've had people show as ¼ of a mile, so touching distance must be less.

Does it depend which mobile mast they ping off of?

I get touching distance pings sometimes and I also regularly get 4 minutes walk pings. I presume touching distance must be significantly closer than 4 mins walk away.

All the touching distance profiles on here (when I'm at home) aren't profiles I want to touch

And there 8 altogether if I include the sister site

Still doesn't improve things
