What do you fabbers think of being WOKE?

It didn't really bother me until WOKE raised it head in my favourite TV shows, Star Trek namely discovery, it raised its head in Wanda vision and the falcon and winter soldier, and the one they have chased for years I won't name due to spoilers.

So for you is being WOKE good or a bad thing?

Star Trek and Marvel have always been woke. Granted it was always subtle in how its woven in to things but its always been there.

"Woke" means awakened, and specifically refers to oppressed people becoming awakened to injustice against them.

Always be suspicious of people that would rather you go back to sleep.

Depends on how the term WOKE is being used and for what purpose.

Woke is a good thing and should bring mainstream media into line with where it should be.

But when it's bandied around as term by some elements as a bully term denoting a weakness then it isn't.

Woke, politically correct, just terms created by people, people who disagree with something and wish to denigrate and reduce the views of others who think differently.

No one has ever been cancelled. They just get criticised publicly. These are the same people who would call someone else snowflake in their position, so need a different term for themselves.

At the end of the day, it’s just consideration for others, and often consideration of things that have never been considered before.

Woke is used as a derogatory term by those who have been pulled up on their outdated views and opinions. They think it's hurtful. It's not.

Catchphrases for people's believes and world views are in general used to demean and devide and are in my opinion toxic.

However in the spirit of the question I'd rather be woke than the opposite

Woke is fine. No problem with that.

People trying to use it to complain is not ok. It's all about how it's being used.

It's a good thing as it makes you more aware of what's around you and alert to the injustices that people face in everyday life.

Unfortunately people who like to keep their minds close use the term negatively and also use words like snowflake because they think people are just "easily offended" by pointing these things out

Woke is frequently used as a derogatory term to attack anything the right wing snowflakes are triggered by

However, this has to be balanced against the amount of virtue signaling we put up with from corporations and businesses looking to exploit minority groups for profit - I think this is what often gets under people's skins rather than the message itself.

Of course the corporations aren't blamed but instead the individuals who have nothing to do with how their plight is being used for profit

This is very true, the approach and use of the "woke" content is more of an issue.

Though if it's not bold enough it often goes ignored by those that don't want to see it.

The X-men is a perfect example of racial prejudice and the hate towards others. It's not been subtle at all. And that's only one example. Stan Lee made sure these values went in to all narratives of the characters.

Political correctness means than you have the same rights as everybody else - that's all.

I would have thought you would have benefited from that directly being from a group of people condemned for being born as an "other".

But if you want to be frozen out and considered a deviant not only by society but also legally than who am I to stop you?

Just don't complain if you end up on the receiving end up abuse, you've just validated your own status as deserved victim

Something I can't agree with but will respect out of my own sense of political correctness and equalitarianism.

To be fair there is certainly a difference in the approach some shows these days take towards the inclusion of such things. Some, not all, go out of their way to make it about the thing they are trying to bring awareness too, instead of it being about part of the good story. The story can often suffer because of it.

Back in the days of TNG and MARVEL comics, it was interwoven better in to stories so that it was not subtle but was not at the expense of the story either. They were just better at combining the two.

If that is the definition then it most definitely is a good thing, and another use of pop culture to make the world more “woke” can only be a good thing!

There was an outcry in the sixties when white Cpt. Kirk had a kiss with a black on screen character!

Woke (in all its terms) has been used to describe all sort of movements throughout history.

What worries me is how easily the narrative is directed by big media and big business these days

A quick News or Facebook campaign can radicalise and motivate a right wing voters much more effectively than any left wing campaign ever can.

Unfortunately, the education systems and standards in this country are designed by ruling classes to maintain the existing class based system.

A generally, conservative, Christian, heterosexual class system.

It doesn't take very much at all for a society to turn on a minority, historically, all through the hegemonic consent of an ignorant population, who are only too happy to vote with the headlines if they're told their freedoms are at risk or some other bullshit narrative.

Remember when gay marriage was going to destroy the fabric or reality? Or when single mothers were the cause of all of the financial problems the country faced under Thatcher? Before that it was black people, the Irish, Jews and since then it's been the Kosovans, the Polish, the Muslims, the trans people etc etc

Never the banks, the illegal wars or the corruption though (just saying)

So when we live in such Orwellian times, always ask yourself - who's making money from this and why?

Be specific! Gina Carano got ousted because she claimed that American conservatives are treated like Jews during the holocaust, she also mocked people who wear masks and gave her support to the capitol insurrection! She’s also not cancelled, she has worked since.

"Woke" is just a word black people use in the US. It means "awakened", and it's just a functional word that's not part of standard English (consider others, like "ain't"). Phrases like "stay woke", meaning "stay alert to racism", have been used for nearly a century - predating not only Star Trek but broadcast television itself.

"What do you fabbers think of being WOKE?

It didn't really bother me until WOKE raised it head in my favourite TV shows, Star Trek namely discovery, it raised its head in Wanda vision and the falcon and winter soldier, and the one they have chased for years I won't name due to spoilers.

So for you is being WOKE good or a bad thing?

How has it 'raised its head' in these shows exactly?

Well white males leads are under threat, I first came across it in the new Star Wars films I came out of the force awakens and wondered where is Luke? only to see him be killed off

I won't spoil Indiana jones but the new film has been shelved due to fan backlash.

a women called gina cohrano was cancelled due to speaking out against the woke culture its endless in pop culture "

White male leads are being reduced, not under threat. Big difference. They are no longer the primary option. They still exist. Look, Robert Pattinson is still a white male Bruce Wayne.

The star wars seqel trilogy was an unguided mess due to poor writing and rian Johnson just wanting to appear clever and "surprise" people with a poor story nothing to do with woke.

Gina was called out, not because she spoke up such things but because she compared being a republican in USA to being a jew in 1940s Germany. A rather self important and victim aimed comment that is not even close in comparison.

I agree with her right to air her thoughts but christ do it in a better way.

"Woke (/'wo?k/ WOHK) is an English adjective meaning 'alert to racial prejudice and discrimination'

Seems like a good thing to me

If that is the definition then it most definitely is a good thing, and another use of pop culture to make the world more “woke” can only be a good thing!

There was an outcry in the sixties when white Cpt. Kirk had a kiss with a black on screen character! "

interesting thanks for that, I heard a podcast on woke in pop culture and one guest put forward that it is a kind of socialisation making bame people more visible in the media, the Americans did this decades ago, but not at the sake of heroes I have grown up with, leave them alone and invent new woke heroes please.

"a women called gina cohrano was cancelled due to speaking out against the woke culture its endless in pop culture "

Gina Chorano was fired by her employer after compared "hating someone for their political views" in the US to the treatment of Jewish people leading up to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.

That's nothing to do with speaking out against being 'woke' and everything to do with her exceptionally poor judgement of comparing her having to face people of an opposing view after her chosen political party lost an election, with the systematic hatred and then murder of millions of people

"Woke, politically correct, just terms created by people, people who disagree with something and wish to denigrate and reduce the views of others who think differently.

No one has ever been cancelled. They just get criticised publicly. These are the same people who would call someone else snowflake in their position, so need a different term for themselves.

At the end of the day, it’s just consideration for others, and often consideration of things that have never been considered before.

Things change and serve different purposes over time. If you don't like it, don't consume the new culture.

You don't have to see it as an attack. Now other people can be included too.

Well said

Calling political correctness mob rule isn't exactly the kind of comment I'd expect a trans person to come out with but like I said, when that statement gets used against them and victimisation occurs I'll not agree that it's right but I'll still respect that this is what they want to believe.

I guess that makes me moronic in their eyes - not that I'll give much weight to their opinion of me.

I'll just stick to being a human rights advocate

Modern usage of "political correctness" refers to inclusive language and behaviour (and that is what right-wing people are criticising).

It does have an unfortunate namesake in the phrases used by early 20th century Fascist movements - e.g. it was used by both the Nazis and the Soviet Union to distinguish "acceptable" opinions and beliefs (with the former, strongly linked also to ethnicity).

And my apologies, I reverted to the OP. You did say political correctness.

One might argue that political correctness and "woke" are related points along a continuum of critique of social change - and that that makes it a question of nuance. I don't think the argument for continuity is desperately difficult here.

But what would I know about social science compared to someone who works in STEM?

Please. Go ahead. What's the material difference?

And please do enlighten me on the details of your analysis as to why political correctness has anything to do with Stalinism. Hint: analysis is not a blunt assertion.

He-man the story recently told was just not centred around him. He was still the same character, he just took a back seat to the story. He wasn't changed. The sort was about the journey of 2 other female characters stepping out of the shadow of the previous main characters for once.

Nobody gives a shit about Indiana Jones anymore to be honest. He was replaced long ago for the new generations with Lara Croft and Nathan Drake.

Luke skywalker was at the hands of terrible writing under Rian Johnson. Ignoring plot lines presented to him by JJ, and destroying a character he didn't like in the first place over characters he essentially got to mold himself. That was at the hands of a writer loving his own product and not respecting what came before, not about wokeness.

Hate to break it to you buddy, but there has been a black Superman in the comics anyway.

I will have to look for them, as I wasn't aware it had already been done, but give me mr Reeves any day.

"I was gonna date last week and the lady said it's silly you can't call mixed race people Half-Cast. What's wrong with that and also that small people are midgets. I said that, surely they should be able to choose what they would like to be called and she said, they are just being silly....some people sadly just don't want to grow. "

I think that's more political correctness than woke then again I have been and can be wrong again. its a minefield that I didn't know I was planting.

"I didn't want to start an argument, but I have learned from here that it is a wide subject that people have alternate views on.

My héros who are gone or change,

he man,

my favourite spy,

indiana jones,

Luke skywalker (but fan blacklash brought him back)

there's talk of a black superman ho my

but I suppose the kids will grow up with a balance

Hate to break it to you buddy, but there has been a black Superman in the comics anyway."

yes Ive been told about superman, but the Star Wars thing is different to me Kathleen Kennedy Steve speilsburg old producer now heads Lucas film and pop culture analysts or movie insiders blame her for the change in Star Wars have you ever watched overlord dvd on YouTube.
