Is this green and pleasant land being irretrievably carved into a series of roads, roundabouts, flyovers and endless estates both industrial and housing?
This area is being buried under concrete and brick at a seemingly alarming rate. |

The south east is. Our area is rapidly becoming one very large housing estate. There's no extra provision for health care and in some cases small villages with one tiny shop are being surrounded by huge housing estates causing chaos on the roads.
People need to live somewhere though |

Indeed they do. But some beautiful farms have vanished since we moved here.
I find the suburban sprawl drab at the best of times. |

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The drive from my house to my parents has changed significantly and to me shockingly in five years. I don't know what the answer is but every time I see a big sign that says "Leafy Meadows, a stunning new development, coming soon" my heart sinks |

London is running out of space, so it's build up or find other places to put people.
We've had thousands more people move into our Borough over the years, with thousands more coming soon.
Once the Riverside project is finished there won't be any more land to build on, but the people keep coming.
As the poorer people can't afford to buy or rent in London any more they have to move further out, so more housing has to be built.
I'm assuming it's similar in other cities.
It's build up, or build out. |

Yes it is. One problem it seems to me is that there are relatively few affordable houses being built. Lip service is being paid to it but I see no real action. |

Our small town constantly has massive new housing estates being built, but no new/bigger shops. We have two doctors surgeries that are full to bursting, a barely functioning hospital with no A&E, all our dentists are closed to new patients. It's ridiculous |

Very few, and those aren't affordable to single people/parents or people on minimum wage or zero hour contracts.
Hundreds of thousands of properties are being, or have been built, in Greater London to accommodate the workforce coming to London to work, because they can no longer afford the inner London prices.
Some councils are knocking down old flats and replacing them with more expensive properties, built by private companies. They say it isn't gentrification but the previous tenants can't afford the new rental prices and have to move out somewhere cheaper.
A lot of people I know have moved out into Essex. |

These are the issues the Government should address when giving permission for land to be built on. |

I left the south east decades ago because it was getting built all over even then. It's much more pleasant northwards of Birmingham. But don't all rush up here! |

I can remember when the M4 was built. You could drive from where I live in Reading to London and see fields both sides of motorway. Now a few fields etc. Reading is nearly joined up with other towns into London. |

It's the same here with lots of new houses (luxury, not affordable) and zero new schools, doctors or any other local service. I have no issue with well placed new housing but all the current system is doing is encouraging people to move here from the really expensive parts of the NW (because these 4-bed luxury homes are cheaper and bigger than a terrace in Cheshire), local young people and families can't afford to stay here and we have a doctor's surgery with over 25k patients and no-one answers the phone and if you submit an online form, you are given an appointment for at least two weeks hence (on the phone). No NHS dentist has taken on new patients since we moved in 2008 and the local primary schools are bursting and kids being allocated to schools several miles away instead.
Most of the developments are the work of Peel Holdings (or their "fluffy" residential arm, Northstone) and they have only one intention - concrete over the world, I think. Look 'em up and you'll see why local people have absolutely zero chance of dissuading local authorities from giving Peel permission to build anything and everything they want. Peel own a fuck ton of greenbelt land around here, all of which they intend to build on, but not one single school or doctors or shop is even in the plans.
There's plenty of brown field sites in the vicinity but no-one can be arsed to remediate this, it's easier to just dig up a field, evict the cows, deny the existence of the newts and chop down the ancient hedgerows |

That description exactly fits where I live too. |
