Are you still going to look your best even as your pennies dwindle?

I bought a load of great coats and shoes etc to last when I had the cash as I never actually wanted to look any less.

I think people respond better to dress and good presentation?

I think you can't look good with cheaper clothes and make up isn't too expensive nowadays.

But if it came down to makeup or food, then I'd go without makeup.

I did the same when Debenhams closed got a few pair of Loakes. Also got some Boss jeans and jumpers and two new suits from my bonus or I’d never buy them.

Make up is different , it has a shelf life. I have some urban decay , too faced and Morplhe in the sales for this years gifts. Good make up is so expensive !

You don't need make up to look good, if you take care of your health and keep your fitness level up you can look good in any situation.

"

Very very true.

But the best, look after and insure if needed things like jackets, watches can be covered on annual travel or contents away from home very cheaply so the initial cost can be spread over 10-20 years.

My Levi's and Lee and 10-15 years old, still great and never go out of fashion. My furniture is all solid wood , bought second hand and will last forever.

It’s not that simple.

There’s a great quote, and I’ve extracted a part of it

“A man who could afford 50 dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in 10 years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent 100 dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.”

There’s no way I could buy a Burberry coat, even if it would last longer.

Yep. People fail to realise there's a certain privilege in being able to buy luxury items, in the sale or not they are still expensive and some can't afford that.

I think people can look very good with non-designer clothes, make up... there are some really good products out there and if you know what you're doing/how to style it, you'll look far better than someone like me who has the disposable income but always looks like a slutty, frizzy postgrad student.
